When he is arrested after a party and accused of murdering his wife Renee (Patricia Arquette), he ends up on death row. Plagued by severe headaches and visions of the Mystery Man (Robert Blake), Fred transforms into the car mechanic Pete Dayton (Balthazar Getty). The guards who find the innocent stranger in the cell have no choice but to let Pete go. But it soon becomes clear that everyone,
trapped in their own fate, is lost… on the Lost Highway.Lost Highway bears the unmistakable signature of David Lynch and is considered a precursor to the acclaimed Mulholland Drive (2001), released shortly thereafter. The typically mysterious Lynch sound was provided by his longtime artistic collaborator Angelo Badalamenti, who was by then no stranger to audiences, having already contributed, among other things, the unforgettable score to Lynch’s cult series Twin Peaks (1990–91).
