2026 fall TV preview: Your guide to new and returning shows

Looking at the list of 2026 fall TV premiere dates is a stark reminder of how the television calendar has shifted in the age of streaming.

It used to be that with the rare exception of a splashy mid-season premiere before February sweeps (remember sweeps?), TV shows premiered in September and finished in May.

The big broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox) are still adhering to those rules for the 2026 fall TV calendar, with slight alterations. Reliable hits like “Tracker” (Oct. 4), “Abbott Elementary” (Oct. 7), and Donnie Wahlberg’s “Boston Blue” (Oct. 9) tend to debut in October, a reflection of how 20- or 22-episode seasons are the new normal instead of the 24 of a previous era.

Streamers, meanwhile, have an entirely different strategy, one dictated by minimizing subscription churn by always promising something new.

Take Apple TV, for instance. The streamer lacked the larger library of a Netflix or a Hulu when it debuted in November 2019. But in the seven years since, it has consistently released at least one new original show or movie per week to keep subscribers interested.

Highlights on Apple TV’s 2026 fall TV calendar include the return of “Slow Horses” (Sept. 16) and “Bad Monkey” (Dec. 2), plus the debut of shows like “Brothers” (Sept. 23) in which “True Detective” stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson reunite playing fictionalized versions of themselves.

Netflix, meanwhile, makes my life difficult by using the announcement of premiere dates as part of its standard marketing strategy, leaving viewers in the dark about when exactly buzzworthy shows like “Pride and Prejudice” or the Boston-set season of “Love Is Blind” will premiere until a month or so beforehand.

Nevertheless, I’ve been able to find a few 2026 fall TV premiere dates for the streaming giant, including the star-filled adaptation of “East of Eden” (Oct. 1) and “Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story” (Sept. 17), Ryan Murphy’s twisted take on the infamous Fall River murders.
