2 Star Wars Prequels Are Officially Back From the Dead

2026 has been a pretty “wizard” year for Star Wars as far as gaming goes. Just a few weeks ago, EA and Lucasfilm Games released Star Wars: Zero Company, the new XCOM-inspired strategy game that takes place in the closing days of the Clone Wars, to widespread critical acclaim. If that wasn’t enough, the world’s most famous sci-fi franchise is returning in just one month with Star Wars: Galactic Racer, which will not only let fans race speeders across the galaxy, but also let themlive out their podracer power fantasy like never before.

As great a year for the franchise as it may be, there are some titles that fans have been waiting for literal years to hear more about. The long period of silence for two Star Wars games in particular has caused widespread rumors to spread throughout the internet that they have been cancelled — an unfortunate fate that all-too-many Star Wars projects have become tragically familiar with. Not only have movies and shows like Rogue Squadron and Lando been shelved, but one of the earliest and most heartbreaking cancellations of the Disney era was Star Wars: 1313, the M-rated Boba Fett video game that promised to be the franchise’s darkest story yet.

Thankfully, Star Wars gaming fans have reason to be excited today, as Lucasfilm Games have officially and quietly confirmed the current fate of two hugely anticipated titles: the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake and Star Wars: Eclipse. The former was announced in 2021 as a remake of what is widely considered as the greatest Star Wars video game ever made, being an RPG set during the height of the Jedi Order’s war with the Sith Empire over a thousand years before the rise of Darth Vader. The latter, which was announced a year later in 2022 with a flashy cinematic trailer, takes place during the High Republic era roughly a century before the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.

Apart from their initial announcement trailers, the KOTOR remake and Eclipse have received practically zero new updates, but according to a new Lucasfilm Games sizzle reel released today, the two games are still very much in development. The reel largely focuses on already released titles like Star Wars: Jedi – Outcast, Star Wars: Outlaws, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and more, but Star Wars: Eclipse and the Knights of the Old Republic remake do make an appearance as well, effectively functioning as proof of life that they’re still being actively worked on by their developers. While the footage shown comes from the already released trailers from almost half a decade ago, the YouTube thumbnail for the reel not only boasts the legendary Darth Revan from KOTOR in the ensemble, but also new looks at other Knights of the Old Republic characters such as Jedi Knight Bastila Shan, Jedi outcast Jolee Bindo, and even everyone’s favorite homicidal assassin droid, HK-47. Characters from Star Wars: The Old Republic, the MMO spin-off of Knights of the Old Republic, also make an appearance in the thumbnail. Curiously enough, though, footage from the reveal trailer of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, the recently announced spiritual successor to KOTOR, was not present in the reel.

Star Wars Celebrates 50 Years of Sci-Fi Magic in 2027

2027 might be the Star Wars franchise’s biggest year yet, as the sci-fi saga is officially celebrating its 50th Anniversary. To celebrate the occasion, Lucasfilm is finally re-releasing the unaltered cut of the original 1977 film for the first time in decades, and in IMAX 70mm at that. Also releasing in that format in 2027 is the brand-new Star Wars: Starfighter, the Ryan Gosling-starring sci-fi adventure that takes place after the events of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Considering that the Knights of the Old Republic remake and Eclipse have been in development for at least 4-5 years now, their release in 2027 is certainly in the realm of possibility.
