EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Two people are in trouble after child abuse allegations at an Evansville daycare.
Records show a warrant was issued Wednesday for Tashshavviyon Stinson, but she hasn’t shown up yet in the Vanderburgh County Jail.
Another woman, 47-year-old Andrea Williamson, is accused of failing to report the abuse. She was arrested and bonded out of jail Thursday.
According to an affidavit, the abuse happened back in May at Kindergate Developmental Child Care Center.
Officials say a five-year-old victim claimed they were put in a closet on two separate occasions and even hit with a handle of a broom.
14 News spoke to Sgt. Anthony Aussieker with EPD for more information.
“The child made allegations that they had not been fed during the day, they had not been given a blanket at naptime, but more concerning is that the child had said they’d been locked in a closet and struck with a broom,” Aussieker stated.
As police investigated, they say those allegations turned out to be true, saying video from the investigation showed 29-year-old Tashshavviyon Stinson, a 10-year veteran at the daycare, putting the 5 year old in the closet, then leaving him alone after hitting the child with a broom.
Court records show Stinson put the child in the closet multiple times and then went to the liquor store. Records reveal Stinson had trouble with alcohol in the past.
“It’s terrifying. You know when we as parents kind of give over some of that care to our children, you know, that’s our most prized possession, so when we do that, we do it in the full faith that this person is going to take appropriate care of our child as we would if we were able to. I can’t imagine the fear, anger, the crazy emotions that family is feeling now,” Aussieker stated.
During the investigation, police arrested 47-year-old Andrea Williamson, who they say was in the classroom at the time of the incident, but failed to report it.
They say Williamson violated Indiana’s mandated reporting laws, and has been charged with neglect of a dependent.
“You don’t get the out to say ‘I was waiting to see’, you are mandated to report immediately, especially in that role of a caregiver, but if you don’t feel comfortable in intervening because of safety or whatever your concerns might be, call 9-1-1,” Aussieker stated.
Again, at this time police are looking for Stinson so they can place her under arrest.
Williamson is out on bond – her court date is July 28th.
