2 dead and multiple people — including police officers — injured in mass shooting at downtown Minneapolis apartment building – WTOP News
(CNN) — At least two people were killed and multiple others injured — including three police officers — in a tragic scene when a mass shooting unfolded at a downtown Minneapolis high-rise Wednesday, officials said.
The shooter was also confirmed dead, officials said.
Following multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire, officers walked into the apartment building where they found victims, heard gunfire and encountered “a haze that significantly limited their visibility,” before some were injured themselves.
Seven patients, including one who died, were brought to a nearby hospital, the city said on X, and another person died at the scene. Three of the injured were in surgery with gunshot wounds, CNN affiliate KARE reported.
How the shooting unfolded
The shooting was reported around 4:36 p.m. local time with initial information indicating one person had been shot, Minneapolis Police Sgt. Garrett Parten said during a news conference Wednesday.
Additional callers reported hearing more gunfire, Parten said.
About three minutes later, officers began arriving at the high-rise apartment building and found wounded inside and heard more gunfire. Authorities did not provide details about what caused the haze they faced inside.
One officer was shot in the leg, and had a non-life-threatening injury, and another was taken in for surgery, the sergeant said. The third officer was being evaluated for a non-life threatening injury.
Earlier in the day, police were called to the same complex to check on a dispute, which may have been related to an individual in the process of eviction, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the incident.
Officials are working to determine if that person is also the shooter.
A preliminary investigation indicates the shooter likely died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the source said.
Around 5:45 p.m. local time, dozens of police cars and officers surrounded the scene, as pedestrians continued walking through the area.
Though many officers, SWAT vehicles and EMS remained at the scene around 6:30 p.m. local time, authorities appeared to be maintaining a calm presence.
The surrounding area is home the Minneapolis Convention Center, hotels, a hospital and scenic Loring Park.
Nearby University of St. Thomas’ Minneapolis campus issued a shelter-in-place order “out of an abundance of caution,” a spokesperson told CNN.
‘Grateful for law enforcement’
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said in a Facebook post his public safety team is responding to the shooting and state officials are on the ground.
“Grateful to law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbors in Downtown Minneapolis this afternoon,” the governor said in a subsequent post. “Minnesota is praying for our first responders.”
Neighboring police agencies, as well as the Minnesota State Patrol, are “working closely” with the Minneapolis Police Department after the shooting, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said in a post on X.
Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the FBI are also responding to the shooting, the agencies said on X.
