A high school graduation ended in terror in Fairfield, leaving a family’s final moments in caps and gowns cut short by gunfire.
Wednesday evening at 7:15 p.m. as the Sem Yeto High School graduation at Fairfield High School wrapped up. a shooter fired in the parking lot. Fairfield Police Officer Michelle Belyea said at a news conference that evening. Police said the crowd on hand was approximately 1,000 people, with hundreds of potential witnesses.
In the chaos that followed, officials said the shooting killed one teenager and wounded three other people, including an 11-year-old child. Police identified the person who died as 18. They did not release any other details about the victims.
The wounded included the 11-year-old, a 20-year-old, and a 25-year-old.
Witness accounts shared afterward described trying scenes near the aftermath. Some witnesses said they saw a woman performing CPR on a teen who was still wearing his graduation cap and gown. Police said it was unclear whether that teen was the one fatally shot.
As investigators work through what happened, Fairfield police said Thursday that they were interviewing witnesses and “working diligently to identify those responsible.”
By Thursday, police and school officials also said there was no indication “of an ongoing threat towards schools and the community.” That reassurance, delivered after a night when families were suddenly reminded how quickly celebrations can turn, did not stop the community from pushing for change.
With Fairfield High’s graduation set for Friday. community members started a petition calling for the ceremony to be moved to a new location. Petitioners said it would be “unsettling to students and families” to hold it at the school stadium. That effort was successful, and the Friday ceremony is set to be held at Armijo High School, also in Fairfield.
Police asked anyone with information about Wednesday’s incident to contact the Fairfield police investigations tip line at (707) 428-7345 or to email juneincidenttips@fairfield.ca.gov.

Graduation parking lot man… how is this even happening. Smh.
I saw someone say it was like the “caps and gowns” moment and then boom. Why was there a shooter RIGHT there? Also they said no ongoing threat which… okay but still doesn’t feel real.
So the 18-year-old died and the 11-year-old got shot, but they don’t know which teen it was? That part sounds messed up, like they’re guessing. Also is this “Sem Yeto High” or “Fairfield High” like the article jumps around.
They moved Friday’s graduation to Armijo High, which is good, but honestly they should’ve done metal detectors years ago. People always act like “it can’t happen here” and then it does. The woman doing CPR while he’s still in his gown is gonna haunt everyone.
