15 shot overnight in Chicago, including several teens

On a stretch of neighborhoods where streets usually hold late-night life, Chicago police say gunfire carved up Saturday night and bled into Sunday morning—leaving at least 15 people shot, including children and teenagers.

Police reported the violence began around 9:30 p.m. Saturday and continued until just after 5 a.m. Sunday. Nearly half of the victims were children and teenagers, including seven people between 12 and 19 years old. An 18-year-old man was fatally shot in the head in Grand Crossing. No arrests have been reported.

In Grand Crossing, officers found the 18-year-old around 1:30 a.m. Sunday in the 7700 block of South Rhodes Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene after being shot in the head. Police said no one has been arrested.

Earlier Saturday night, four boys were shot in the Grand Boulevard neighborhood. Police said the four boys were in the 4500 block of South Prairie Avenue when someone opened fire on them at around 9:30 p.m.

All four were reported in stable condition. A 12-year-old and a 13-year-old were both shot in the leg. A 13-year-old was shot in the foot, and a 14-year-old was grazed in the back. Three were taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, and the 13-year-old shot in the leg was taken to Stroger Hospital. No one has been arrested, police said.

The shootings spread across the city. Around 11 p.m. Saturday in Belmont Craigin. a 21-year-old man was dropped off at Community First Medical Center suffering from a gunshot to the foot. Police said he was in a car in the 2100 block of North Central Avenue when he was shot. He was in fair condition.

In Grand Boulevard, an 18-year-old woman, a 19-year-old woman and an adult man were shot just after midnight. All three were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center. The 18-year-old woman, shot in the abdomen, was in critical condition. The other two were stable.

In Chatham, a 27-year-old man was shot around 3 a.m. Sunday in the 7900 block of South Langley Avenue. He went to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center, where he was stable.

Just before 4 a.m. in Lincoln Park, a 39-year-old woman was shot while standing outside in the 600 block of West Belden Avenue. She took herself to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and was in critical condition. Officers also described a wide reach of the violence, hitting nearly every side of the city.

In North Lawndale, two people were shot around 4:15 a.m. in the 1100 block of South Mozart Street. Police said the victims were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. A 47-year-old man was in critical condition after being shot in both legs. and a 46-year-old woman was in stable condition after being shot in the leg.

In the Near South Side, police said a 26-year-old man was shot just after 5:20 a.m. in the 2200 block of South State Street. A dark sedan pulled up, and someone inside shot him in the leg. He was taken to Insight Hospital and was in stable condition.

Another victim, a 32-year-old man, was taken to Mount Sinai with multiple gunshot wounds. He would not tell officers when or where he was shot. He was in critical condition.

Across the cases, the common thread was the rapid jump from block to block, leaving families and communities to sit with the same unanswered question: how the night kept unfolding, and who will be held accountable—at least for now, with no arrests reported.
