Rio Paloma, Texas is supposed to be a fresh start.

Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler are living proof that nothing stays simple for long. Since the Yellowstone finale. the pair have been pushed into a new life with almost nothing—just a newly purchased ranch in Rio Paloma. Texas. and an adopted son. Carter (Finn Little). Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening) of the 10 Petal Ranch is watching them closely. and once business competition becomes personal. the whole community feels it.

Season 1 Episode 7’s energy is clear: survival isn’t just physical here. It’s emotional, social, and—when it needs to be—brutally practical. Here are the best Dutton Ranch characters, ranked.

10. Rob-Will Jackson

Played by Jai Courtney

Rob-Will Jackson (Jai Courtney) is the youngest son of Beulah Jackson, and the black sheep of the family. His substance abuse makes him unfit to run the 10 Petal Ranch. and it’s also tied to the life of fellow ranch hand Wes Ayers (Nakao DeCoite). who dies. Rob-Will then decides it’s fine to dump Wes’s body on the Dutton Ranch.

Beulah doesn’t punish him—she “babies” him, sending him to a rehab center for months. But even that protection doesn’t change him. Since Rob-Will is Beulah’s biological son, he thinks the ranch should fall into his lap. In the world of Dutton Ranch, that belief doesn’t hold up.

9. Joaquin Jackson

Played by Juan Pablo Raba

Beth once compared Joaquin Jackson (Juan Pablo Raba) to her late brother, Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), and that parallel lands uncomfortably. Joaquin is Beulah’s adopted eldest son, and unlike Rob-Will, he’s the manager of the 10 Petal Ranch—a “fixer” who believes control can be bought.

In Joaquin’s mind, workers are less than human. He thinks he can purchase silence to stop trouble from turning into revolt. But the working-class logic of dignity doesn’t fit his expectations, and that clash is part of why Joaquin feels so dangerous.

8. Beulah Jackson

Played by Annette Bening

Beulah is the ranch queen of Rio Palmo, Texas, and she isn’t thrilled by Beth and Rip starting a ranch on her territory. She’s wary of new rivals, and she’s competitive enough to keep a close eye on them.

Still. Beulah isn’t shown actively sabotaging the Duttons “yet.” What she has instead are their secrets—kept for leverage if she needs it. Mid-season, audiences see how much Beulah and Beth truly overlap. Rip comments that the two share the same tenacity. Beulah admits that watching Beth negotiate with an investor feels like watching herself 20 years ago. Respect isn’t a performance for Beulah; it’s the reason she tests Beth’s business skills instead of trying to destroy her.

7. Oreana Jackson

Played by Natalie Alyn Lind

Oreana Jackson (Natalie Alyn Lind) is Beulah’s granddaughter, and at first she plays the role of the popular school girl—complete with an “awesome car” and a boyfriend. But at home, she’s trapped under pressure to become the sole heir to the 10 Petal Ranch, a destiny she “absolutely abhors.”

Oreana’s teenage rebellion isn’t only style; it’s also choice. She tricks Carter into buying beer, but she genuinely cares about him afterward and makes amends. Despite her being Carter’s tougher opponent emotionally. she’s also the person who shows up when he breaks down—opening her arms to comfort him. Beth is even mildly impressed by her resilience, despite Oreana’s family roots.

6. Dwight White

Played by Ray McKinnon

Dwight White’s time on Dutton Ranch is brief, but it’s the kind of brief that leaves a mark. After an upset Carter goes against Beth and Rip’s wishes and skips school, he stumbles on Dwight White looking for a job.

Even with that past hanging over the scenes, Dwight connects with Carter through advice and the appeal of a “simple life.” He comes off as a cowboy through and through, and in the short time they know each other, he helps Carter find himself.

5. Zachariah Moss

Played by Marc Menchaca

Zachariah Moss (Marc Menchaca) arrives as a new ranch hand, and Rip—who usually has a good eye for hires—brings him on after spotting him. Zachariah is devout, and the job comes to him quickly.

But the ranch eventually witnesses what Zachariah is carrying. His past is dangerous and complicated, even if he seems like a good man in the present. Zachariah can’t change what happened, but he has vowed to spend the rest of his life making amends.

Beth recognizes that character fast. She once told him that her father would have liked Zachariah—an assessment that matters in a world where reputation is survival.

4. Carter Green

Played by Finn Little

Carter Green (Finn Little) is adopted by Beth and Rip. and he’s trying to do what they want: build a normal life in Rio Paloma. One of the first steps of that plan is getting him into school. Beth and Rip send the 19-year-old back to high school. and Carter quickly becomes the black sheep of the student body.

He’s soft-spoken and naive, especially considering he comes from two former hell-raising parents. Carter believes he belongs solely to ranch life. but the story frames it differently: the guidance from Beth and Rip is meant to give him years ahead of him to learn how to tend the ranch—with an education in the mix.

3. Rip Wheeler

Played by Cole Hauser

Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) remains strict, reliable, and hardworking—like the Rip fans remember from Yellowstone. This time, though, he’s trying to break out of his mold as the former right-hand man to John Dutton (Kevin Costner).

Carving out a ranch of his own is daunting, especially in unfamiliar territory. But Rip’s strength is that he’s willing to adapt when necessary. When financial struggles hit, he’s willing to extend a hand to the competition.

That decision becomes tangible: Rip ends up becoming Beulah’s foreman on her ranch. Whatever job he’s given, he does it well.

2. Beth Dutton

Played by Kelly Reilly

Beth Dutton has come a long way from the insanity of the Yellowstone finale. After losing everything her family built in Montana, she has come to terms with something harder than revenge: some things are out of her control, and that’s okay.

Most important for her now, Beth is no longer dealing with that fallout alone. Her husband Rip and her son Carter are safely relocated to Texas.

Beth’s softness shows up around Rip, but the change doesn’t erase her. Old habits die hard. Even with a softened heart, Beth still knows how to command a room when needed. If it means taking out collateral in the middle of the night—Yellowstone style—then that’s what it means.

1. Everett McKinney

Played by Ed Harris

Everett McKinney (Ed Harris) is a different kind of presence entirely: calm. cool. and composed in a way that cuts through Beth’s guarded instincts. Beth has trust issues with strangers, shaped by the volatile environment she grew up in. When she pleads with Everett to save an injured horse instead of euthanizing it, she feels something quickly.

His innate kindness is there from the start.

Everett is the kind of old man people instinctively call a safe space. Whether it’s the Duttons or the Jacksons, he allows people to confide in him without judgment. He’s also ready with wise advice when it matters—more listener than interrogator, and more steadiness than spectacle.

There’s a reason Everett ends up at the top: in a series built on power and consequences, his quiet steadiness makes everyone else’s choices land harder.

  1. They said “ranked by the damage they cause” like… ok but why is Carter even on this list? I feel like people are just rooting for the wrong character. Also the title says 10 best characters but it’s mostly who’s the worst??

  2. Everett McKinney quiet kindness sounds nice but I swear he’s gonna turn out shady in like episode 8 or whatever. Rio Paloma doesn’t feel like a “fresh start” at all lol it’s gonna be the same Yellowstone mess. Also Beulah Jackson watching them closely… that’s basically the whole plot, right?

  3. I saw Jai Courtney listed and thought this was another show entirely. Like is Rob-Will Jackson related to the Duttons or is he from the other ranch?? The whole Rio Paloma thing confuses me. They keep talking about choices rippling through town but no one explains anything, it’s just names and drama.
