Young, broke, scammed: the fear behind her film
McKenna became obsessed with the fact that her friend, who was “very smart and competent”, had almost been scammed out of all her savings. She claims that when she started researching the topic she found young people are, contrary to the popular view, more often the victims of such scams than older people. And somehow, that seemed to dovetail with a general sense among her friendship group about how challenging the world has become. “I was having a lot of conversations about the cost-of-living crisis
and financial instability and job insecurity, and the ebb and flow of living with that. And I guess the feeling I wanted to get across in the film is the disorienting, chaotic, and propulsive nature of trying to exist in this stimulating world with all of those external pressures coming through. “I felt like it might be the only time I’m interested in dissecting my 20s,” adds the writer-director, who turns 30 next month. “All the other film ideas I’m writing are really not similar
at all to this.”

So basically movies are just warning us about scams now?
I feel like young people get targeted but also like… who has savings anymore? Cost of living is already eating everything. Glad she made a film about it though, because I keep seeing “investment” stuff pop up in my feed.
Wait so she almost got scammed out of all her savings too or is it just her friend? Either way the headline sounds like those scammers were like, super smart and competent? Sounds like something is off like not enough details.
This is why I don’t trust any of the apps people tell me to download. They say young folks are “more often the victims” but then it’s also the cost of living and job insecurity like… that doesn’t mean people are automatically dumb, it just means everyone is stressed. The whole “disorienting, chaotic” thing honestly feels like my 20s, just without the film version. Also she turns 30 next month? Like that’s supposed to explain the fear? I dunno.
