Woad penalized in US Women’s Open for bunker breach

Lottie Woad was handed a two-stroke penalty during the third round of the US Women’s Open on Saturday following a rule breach in a bunker. The 22-year-old, who is making her debut at the tournament this week, was adjudged to have improved her stance in the sand trap on the ninth hole at Riviera Country Club, resulting in a penalty under Rule 8.1a of the regulations. The infringement saw the rising English superstar move from picking up a bogey five to taking a triple-bogey seven

The three-time LPGA Tour winner, who is still aiming to break her major duck having finished as runner-up in this tournament three years ago, shot six under par for the day. That 69 was the low round of the tournament so far and saw Hull move to three under par for the tournament and into the clubhouse lead. “I kind of like chasing,” she said. “I just find it more fun

  1. Wait so she improved her stance and that counts as cheating?? Golf rules are wild. How is it even a breach if she was just trying to recover.

  2. Two-stroke penalty for a bunker stance thing… that’s brutal. Also how come they didn’t tell her right away? like if it changed her score that much, seems messed up.

  3. I think this is the same rule where you’re not allowed to move the sand more than once? But they said it was on the ninth hole at Riviera and it went from bogey 5 to triple 7?? Sounds like the course should’ve just let her finish. Penalties like that feel rigged.

  4. Charley Hull went 69 and now she’s in the lead, cool cool. Meanwhile Woad gets punished for something tiny in a bunker and it totally swings the day. I’m not even into women’s golf but this penalty timing (two holes later) sounds kinda off to me. Like how do they even track that in real time?
