Wings Injury Update: Azzi Fudd to Face Dream

Azzi Fudd is listed probable for Dallas against Atlanta despite a knee issue, after a limited debut in the Wings’ season-opening win.

A home test for the Dallas Wings arrives with a fresh question mark at the heart of their lineup: how quickly Azzi Fudd can ramp up after a knee injury.. The former UConn standout is expected to be available when Dallas hosts the Atlanta Dream at College Park Center on Tuesday. with the franchise chasing win No.. 2 following a narrow opening-day success.

Dallas came out sharp in its season opener, beating the Indiana Fever 107-104 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Saturday.. Fudd. though. had the kind of debut fans had been waiting for that still left plenty to be desired—she recorded three points on two attempts. added one rebound and one assist. and played 18 minutes off the bench.

Coach Jose Fernandez made clear that Dallas is not ready to force a starting role immediately. even with Fudd’s star status and the anticipation surrounding her transition to the Wings.. Fernandez said he is “not too keen” on starting her yet. pointing to how deep the backcourt already is with Paige Bueckers. Arike Ogunbowale. Odyssey Sims. and Aziaha James.. For the Wings. that matters because it frames Tuesday’s matchup as less about a single debutant changing the roster overnight and more about fitting her into an existing rhythm.

The injury update is the key part of the conversation. The 23-year-old is being bothered by a knee injury, but Dallas has listed her as probable to play against Atlanta. That designation suggests the Wings believe she can contribute, even if her workload or role may still be managed.

The expectations around Fudd remain high, largely because of the track record that preceded her UConn career.. As she settles into the professional game. she has also already shown she is not afraid to challenge narratives—recently. she took a subtle dig at referees regarding whether she was being allowed to play physical.

Ogunbowale helped set the tone for Dallas in the season-opening win, leading the team with 22 points and five assists.. She also sounded genuinely enthusiastic about Fudd’s presence. describing her as one of the best shooters she has ever seen.. Ogunbowale praised how Fudd understands her role while still having the ability to score aggressively. saying having her be more assertive can only help the team.

Across the floor, Atlanta arrives with momentum of its own after also winning on opening day. The Dream edged the Minnesota Lynx 91-90 at Target Center on Saturday in a closely contested matchup, giving them a one-game winning start heading into Tuesday’s road trip.

Allisha Gray paced Atlanta with 24 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals.. Angel Reese added a major all-around impact in her much-anticipated Dream debut. scoring 11 points with 14 rebounds. two assists. two steals. and three blocks—numbers that underline why Atlanta will likely look for physicality and interior presence against the Wings.

With both teams beginning the season with narrow victories, Tuesday’s game takes on extra weight: it’s not just about win No. 2, but about whether Dallas can translate its early chemistry into consistency while integrating Fudd in a way that protects her knee and maximizes effectiveness.

For Dallas. the biggest immediate decision may be timing—how soon Fudd looks fully comfortable and how the Wings balance their backcourt depth with the need to get her touches.. The coach’s comments point to a measured approach. and the probable tag suggests she is cleared enough to play. though her minutes and impact may depend on how the matchup develops.

For Atlanta. the emphasis is likely to stay with what worked against Minnesota: Gray’s two-way production and Reese’s ability to control rebounds and the paint.. Against a Dallas roster that features multiple playmakers in the backcourt. Atlanta’s defensive intensity and rebounding could shape whether the Dream can keep the tempo tight enough to repeat last weekend’s one-possession outcome.

  1. Probable is such a weird word to hang your hopes on. If Azzi Fudd’s knee is still acting up, why risk her in a home game? Three points on two attempts in 18 minutes is cool for the debut, but I’d rather they ramp her slowly and don’t turn this into a bigger injury.

  2. Megan O’Connell, I get the caution, but “probable” usually means they think she can handle some minutes. Also, Coach Jose Fernandez saying he’s not keen on starting her right away makes sense with the current depth—Bueckers, Ogunbowale, Sims, and James. That’s the real lever: manage workload, see how she moves, don’t blow up the lineup.

  3. So the plan is basically: “She’s probably fine… but we’re definitely not starting her.” Love the confidence. Meanwhile, Marcus Ellison is right that the Wings have bodies in that backcourt, so it’s less about whether she can come in and more about whether the knee can handle basketball for more than 18 minutes. If it’s still limited, we’re just going to watch another careful workload experiment.

  4. I’m honestly more worried about chemistry than the points. Like, if Fudd is only ramping up, she needs reps with whoever she’s sharing the floor with, not just random burst minutes. But if they keep her role flexible vs Atlanta, I can live with probable.
