White House nods Trump as Bond after ‘sex appeal’ push

After casting director Nina Gold said the next James Bond must “ooze sex appeal,” the White House Twitter account shared a post tying the franchise’s search to President Trump—alongside a “007” image—while the next film is set to be directed by Denis Villeneuv

The conversation around who will become the next James Bond turned sharply suggestive—and then quickly political—after casting director Nina Gold laid out what she believes the role requires.

Speaking to Deadline at Cannes, Gold said the next actor carrying on the franchise must “ooze sex appeal.” She also added that whoever is chosen should expect to play Bond for at least three films, framing the role as more than a one-off casting job.

On Saturday, the White House’s Twitter account escalated the moment by sharing a post from Discussing Film that said casting for the 007 role has begun. Attached was an image showing President Trump holding a gun with “Make America Great Again” in gold above the numbers “007.”

The behind-the-scenes hunt is also moving forward on the business side.. A spokesperson for Amazon MGM Studios said Thursday that “The search for the next James Bond is underway. ” adding that Amazon MGM Studios “don’t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process. ” while promising more updates “as soon as the time is right.”

In the middle of the search, the franchise’s next chapter is already mapped out in key production terms.. The upcoming iteration of the perennially British spy tale will be directed by Denis Villeneuve and produced by Amy Pascal and David Heyman.. Daniel Craig played Bond in the most recent run. and prior actors include Sean Connery. George Lazenby. Roger Moore. Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan—each from Scotland. Australia. Ireland. or England.

Traditionally, actors pursuing the part of James Bond have gone through multiple rounds of screen tests, performing scenes from classic Bond films. The availability online of Henry Cavill’s screen test for the role—despite him not landing the part—remains part of the public casting folklore.

Gold, meanwhile, is widely known for casting “Game of Thrones,” “The Crown,” and several “Star Wars” movies.. The entertainment industry’s language about what Bond should feel like—like Gold’s insistence on “sex appeal”—has now collided with a very public. very direct political signal from the White House account. even as the studio keeps its casting details sealed for the moment.

The pattern is straightforward: Gold describes a specific quality for the next Bond and expects a multi-film run, then casting starts while the studio limits comment, and finally a “007” image featuring Trump is shared as the search proceeds.
