Waterside Drive closure in DC postponed after crews uncover century-old utility line – WTOP News

A planned closure of Waterside Drive in Northwest D.C. has been postponed after construction crews discovered a utility line dating to the early 1900s during preliminary excavation work, according to the National Park Service.

The closure had been scheduled to begin Monday as part of a rehabilitation project expected to affect traffic around Rock Creek Parkway and Massachusetts Avenue NW.

A National Park Service spokesperson told WTOP that crews are evaluating the utility line and addressing any potential conflicts before work proceeds.

“This precaution will help minimize disruptions and avoid unnecessarily extending the roadway closure,” the spokesperson said.

The National Park Service said it will announce new closure dates once the work is complete.

Under the original plan, portions of Waterside Drive were scheduled to close through Nov. 13, with detours affecting drivers traveling between Rock Creek Parkway and Massachusetts Avenue NW.
