Watch Twins’ Emmanuel Rodriguez jumps into the crowd to prevent an Angels home run

Minnesota Twins rookie Emmanuel Rodriguez made one of the best defensive plays of his young MLB career Friday night, robbing Los Angeles Angels shortstop Zach Neto of a home run at Angel Stadium.

Neto led off the bottom of the sixth inning with Minnesota holding a 3-0 lead. He drove a Connor Prielipp curveball deep toward the left-field corner, but Rodriguez tracked the ball to the warning track before leaping over the low wall and reaching into the crowd to make the catch.

The ball came off Neto’s bat at 102.8 mph with a 43-degree launch angle and traveled 357 feet. Rodriguez’s catch kept the Angels off the scoreboard and preserved Minnesota’s three-run advantage.

Prielipp took advantage of the defensive gem and continued his dominant outing. The Twins starter completed a career-high seven scoreless innings, allowing only two hits while striking out eight batters.

Rodriguez, 23, has quickly made his presence felt since making his MLB debut on September 12. He homered in his first career plate appearance and entered the majors as one of Minnesota’s top outfield prospects.

The rookie has attracted attention for his power and plate discipline, but Friday’s catch showed another part of his game. Rodriguez covered plenty of ground before making a difficult play even more challenging by going over the railing and into the first row.

Minnesota completed the night with a 3-0 shutout, giving Prielipp and the Twins defense plenty to celebrate.

Rodriguez’s catch also gave the rookie another memorable highlight just days into his MLB career, with Minnesota continuing its final stretch of the regular season.
