U.S. honors fallen officers during National Police Week

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says it is recognizing federal, state, and local law enforcement during National Police Week, from May 10 through May 16, 2026, with special remembrance for officers who died in the line of duty.

Agents don’t stop moving when the cameras roll, and officers don’t hesitate when danger closes in.. On Thursday, the U.S.. Attorney’s Office announced it is using National Police Week to honor law enforcement’s service and sacrifice—extending the tribute from federal agencies to state and local departments.

National Police Week runs Sunday, May 10, through Saturday, May 16, 2026. Acting U.S. Attorney Catherine Crosby said the office is focused on the work of “the brave men and women in law enforcement—especially in the Northern District of Alabama—who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe.”

“These men and women run toward danger without hesitation and deserve our unwavering respect,” Crosby said. She added that the office is “especially” remembering officers who “made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty,” saying their “courage, service, and dedication” will “never be forgotten.”

The week’s observances trace back to President Kennedy’s 1962 proclamation establishing Peace Officers Memorial Day and National Police Week. Peace Officers Memorial Day, which falls on May 15 each year, is dedicated to honoring law enforcement officers killed or disabled in the line of duty.

In its announcement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said each year the nation celebrates law enforcement’s contributions—recognizing “hard work, dedication, loyalty, and commitment to keeping our communities safe.”

The remembrance also reached beyond individual agencies.. The names of 363 officers killed in the line of duty were added to the wall at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington. D.C.. Those names were read on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at the 38th Annual Candlelight Vigil in Washington, D.C.
