Trump-Xi Summit Fails to Deliver Big Breakthroughs

Day 1 of the Trump-Xi summit produced cooperation rhetoric on trade, fentanyl, and Hormuz, but no major deals—while Taiwan tensions loomed.

Beijing’s polished summit stage may have projected cooperation, but the first day of talks between President Donald Trump and Xi Jinping brought few tangible wins—amid sharp concerns over Taiwan and a politically constrained White House trying to show economic progress.

“Partners. not adversaries” framed the high-stakes meeting in the Great Hall of the People. with both leaders describing a push to strengthen economic ties and. in Xi’s words. outline a “new vision” for the relationship.. Yet the atmosphere was undercut by persistent warnings about Taiwan. a subject the two sides have long treated as both a diplomatic flashpoint and a core test of influence.

Xi cautioned Trump that disagreements involving Taiwan could destabilize the relationship and even escalate into conflict.. In a readout of the meeting. China said that if the Taiwan question is handled properly. bilateral relations could remain stable. but that failure could lead to clashes and jeopardize the entire relationship.

China does not recognize Taiwan’s sovereignty and has repeatedly criticized Washington’s support for Taipei.. With the summit underway, experts had expected Beijing to press Trump to delay a promised $14 billion arms package for Taiwan.. The deal. approved in January and awaiting Trump’s sign-off. comes after Trump had already authorized another sizable package—$11.1 billion—just the previous month.

Ahead of the talks, analysts also anticipated Trump might look to soften public emphasis on U.S.. ties to Taiwan in order to secure better trade outcomes with China.. Those pressures. they said. were compounded by political headwinds at home. including low approval ratings attributed in part to high fuel prices tied to the Iran war.. Additional uncertainty came from U.S.. court rulings that limited the president’s ability to impose broad tariffs on China and other countries.

Still, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio played down the idea that Washington’s position on Taiwan had shifted. He said China raises the issue on its side and the U.S. reiterates its position, then the negotiations move forward to other topics.

The White House readout offered another signal of where priorities were focused.. It did not mention Taiwan at all, instead centering the discussion on trade and investment.. The two sides. the readout said. explored ways to enhance economic cooperation—expanding market access for American businesses in China and increasing Chinese investment in U.S.. industries.

But major agreements were not announced during the meeting day. That included no clear breakthrough on a potential rare earths arrangement or on investments in artificial intelligence. Trump did, however, point to an agreement for Xi to buy 200 Boeing jets, according to the White House readout.

The administration also highlighted fentanyl-related cooperation.. The leaders pledged to work toward ending the flow of fentanyl precursors from China into the United States.. For Washington. that focus aligns with broader domestic pressure to address drug supply chains. while for Beijing it offers a concrete area where joint steps can be framed without immediately revisiting the more contentious Taiwan issue.

Agriculture and goodwill gestures also featured prominently.. Chinese purchases of U.S.. farm goods were a key theme. and Beijing moved to restore beef trade by issuing new import licenses for hundreds of U.S.. slaughterhouses, allowing shipments to resume.. The licenses, however, do not guarantee that China will buy large volumes of U.S.. beef.

Energy and security concerns tied to the Iran war added another layer to the summit agenda.. According to the White House. Xi and Trump agreed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open and demilitarized and that Tehran cannot be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.. The U.S.. readout also said Xi opposed efforts to militarize the strait and objected to any plan to charge tolls for its use. while expressing interest in purchasing more American oil to reduce reliance on the strait over time.

Trump’s comments after the meeting reflected a separate but related thread: the possibility that China could limit military assistance to Iran while continuing energy imports.. Speaking to Fox News’s Sean Hannity. Trump said Xi told him Beijing would not provide Tehran with military equipment. while also noting that China buys a large share of its oil from Iran and wanted to keep doing so.

Trump is set to remain in China for one more day before returning to Washington. and he has invited Xi to visit the White House on Sept.. 24.. Whether that planned follow-up yields real economic deals—or instead leaves the summit defined largely by rhetoric and unresolved Taiwan risk—may hinge on how far both sides are willing to move on sensitive categories like arms for Taiwan and broader trade questions.

As Trump pressed for progress abroad, political volatility continued to surface elsewhere in Western capitals, underscoring how fragile leadership can shape policy outcomes.

In Britain. Health Secretary Wes Streeting resigned on Thursday. delivering what he called a “lost confidence” rebuke of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s leadership without initiating an immediate formal challenge for the top job.. In a letter to Starmer. Streeting said the government lacked “vision. ” suffered “drift” where it needed direction. and that he could not remain in the cabinet.. He warned that the far-right Reform UK party represents “an existential threat” to the United Kingdom’s integrity and values. urging instead a “bold vision and bigger solutions” to meet ongoing national crises.

The resignation created political damage for Starmer’s government.. To trigger a contest for prime minister, Streeting would need the backing of one-fifth of Labour’s parliamentarians, or 81 lawmakers.. Downing Street had not issued a comment by the time of the resignation. while Starmer has repeatedly said he will not resign. arguing leadership changes would worsen instability.

In Latvia, coalition politics unraveled quickly.. Prime Minister Evika Silina resigned on Thursday, bringing down her coalition government just months before an election scheduled for October.. Silina will remain in a caretaker capacity until a successor is selected.. In the meantime. President Edgars Rinkevics will meet with all parliamentary parties on Friday to begin determining who can lead next.

Silina’s resignation followed a direct breakdown with Defense Minister Andris Spruds.. Last Thursday, several Ukrainian drones reportedly entered Latvian territory from Russia, and one accidentally exploded at an oil storage facility.. No injuries were reported, but locals said they received a warning text only after the incident had already occurred.. Latvia’s army chief said the military had not detected the drones upon entry.

Silina said the episode showed defense leadership failed to fulfill promises of “safe skies.” On X. she said she fired Spruds. citing insufficient development of anti-drone systems.. In response, Spruds’s left-leaning Progressives party withdrew support from Silina’s coalition, leaving her without a majority.

Meanwhile, the search for calm in the Middle East remained unsettled.. Lebanon demanded that Israel adhere to an agreed cease-fire with Hezbollah during U.S.-mediated talks in Washington on Thursday. the third round of high-level dialogue focused on ending the Israel-Hezbollah conflict that reignited on March 2 after the outbreak of war in Iran.

The truce, first declared April 16, was set to expire on Sunday.. Despite the cease-fire framework, attacks continued.. Lebanon’s health ministry alleged that Israeli strikes on Wednesday killed at least 22 people, including eight children.. Israel, in turn, blamed Hezbollah for firing an explosive drone that injured Israeli civilians near the border.

Israel insists that negotiations must deliver lasting peace that requires Hezbollah’s full disarmament.. Hezbollah. as an Iranian proxy. has refused to disarm or recognize the talks in Washington. and no Hezbollah representatives attended the U.S.-mediated sessions.. Lebanon’s government also does not control Hezbollah, shaping the limits of what any agreement can realistically enforce.

Away from the corridors of power. a small Dutch town is betting on a much more modest discovery for its future.. Volunteers in Wolder, in a community of about 1,500 people, reported finding a skeleton beneath the floor of St.. Peter and Paul’s Church—remains they believe could be those of Charles de Batz de Castelmore. known as d’Artagnan. the real-life inspiration behind Alexandre Dumas’s Three Musketeers.

The bones were sent to a Dutch university for verification, a process expected to take weeks.. Even before identification is confirmed. the village has begun brainstorming tourism ideas. including bus tours and luxury lodging. with the hope that a positive result could help revive local travel interest.

For Trump’s summit trip. the immediate takeaway is narrower: talks produced signals on trade focus. fentanyl and energy security. but without headline deals that could claim a clear Day 1 victory.. The next rounds—and whether Taiwan continues to cast a long shadow—will likely determine whether the rest of the trip yields something more than carefully managed cooperation language.

  1. I dont trust anything China says period. Xi is just smiling to his face while stealing everything we got. Trump better not give an inch on Taiwan or we are done as a country honestly.

  2. wait so they were talking about fentanyl too?? I thought this was just a trade meeting. see this is why nobody tells us the full story they just pick and choose what to put in the headline and people like me dont even find out the real stuff until way later. my cousin was saying something about this last week and I didnt believe him but I guess he was right. anyway I still dont see how meeting in China even helps us when they literally make all the fentanyl in the first place so why are we sitting down with them like theyre doing us a favor

  3. everyone acting surprised but what did they expect one meeting to fix everything. these things take years and nobody wants to hear that. also the media always calls it a failure when nothing explodes on day one which is kind of ridiculous if you think about it. day one people. relax.
