Tom Francis, the British stage actor known for “Sunset Boulevard,” has auditioned to play James Bond. The search is ongoing under casting director Nina Gold, with several other names circulating unofficially.
Tom Francis may be best known for treading the boards opposite Nicole Scherzinger in Jamie Lloyd’s revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Sunset Boulevard. ” but his next audition is aimed at a different kind of spotlight.. The 26-year-old British actor has auditioned to play James Bond, with the 007 casting process still moving forward.
The audition is part of a wider casting effort that remains underway, overseen by casting director Nina Gold. Reps for Francis and Amazon MGM Studios, the producer and financier behind the Bond franchise, provided no comment.
Rumors have also circulated beyond Francis, though none are confirmed in this round of casting.. Names mentioned include Jacob Elordi. the Oscar-nominated star of “Frankenstein” and “Euphoria”; Aaron Taylor-Johnson. who appeared in “Godzilla” and won a Golden Globe for “Nocturnal Animals”; and Callum Turner. who recently headlined “Eternity” opposite Elizabeth Olsen and is set to star alongside Monica Barbaro in “One Night Only.” Another name floated by an insider was Cosmo Jarvis of “Shōgun. ” after a breakout in last year’s Alex Garland film “Warfare.”
Jarvis’s spokesperson, however, sharply closed the door. “Cosmo is not in the mix for the role of James Bond and is not auditioning for it,” the spokesperson said.
Francis’s career credentials have leaned heavily toward theater.. He won an Olivier Award for “Sunset Boulevard” and received a Tony nomination.. His performance of the title song featured him walking through New York City’s theater district while cameras captured his every move. a moment described as show-stopping and one that became a cultural event in the city.
On screen, his track record is thinner.. He had a small role in “Jay Kelly. ” the recent George Clooney vehicle. and is set to appear in Peter Berg’s “The Mosquito Bowl. ” a sports drama set in World War II that also includes Nicholas Galitzine and Bill Skarsgård.. His TV debut came in the final season of the Netflix series “You.”
The casting process described here keeps expanding the list of possibilities while simultaneously narrowing it through denials.. Francis has auditioned as the search continues under Nina Gold. and at least one of the other rumored contenders. Cosmo Jarvis. has been explicitly ruled out by his spokesperson. with no auditioning on his end.
For Francis, the Bond audition adds another high-profile target beyond an already attention-grabbing stage presence.. With Amazon MGM Studios and Francis’s representatives offering no comment. the next piece of the puzzle will likely come as the ongoing casting work progresses and more names are confirmed or dismissed.
