Tigers’ Matinee vs Mets Hinges on Montero’s Bounce

Tigers try – After Detroit’s 3-2 extra-innings loss Wednesday, the Tigers face the New York Mets Thursday at 1:10 p.m. with Keider Montero on the mound, trying to stop a sweep and keep their momentum alive.

When the Tigers couldn’t push through a low-scoring night on Wednesday, it didn’t just spoil the pitching work.. New York’s offense answered late—using a seventh-inning run to tie things up—and Detroit eventually fell 3-2 in the 10th.. Now there’s a different pressure on Thursday afternoon: keep the Mets from completing the sweep.

Detroit (19-24) heads into Game 44 at Citi Field in Queens for a 1:10 p.m.. matinee against the Mets (17-25).. The matchup on the mound is set with right-hander Keider Montero—currently the de facto No.. 2 starter—taking the ball for Detroit as he builds on recent form.. He has stepped in for the ailing Justin Verlander, and Montero has responded with two straight quality starts.

Those outings have added up to a 1.42 ERA and a 3.91 FIP over 12 2/3 innings, with a win credited to his efforts. He is also meeting the Mets for the first time.

For New York. the Tigers will see a younger arm in Nolan McLean. a 24-year-old right-hander who has been supplying the kind of innings his team needs this season.. McLean has allowed at least one run in all eight of his starts. but he’s also kept things from slipping away completely—delivering robust strikeout numbers while never walking more than two batters in any appearance.

Detroit has faced McLean before. Last year on Sept. 2 in Detroit, he threw a quality start, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out seven over six innings for the win.

Thursday’s Game 44 pits Montero (2-2, 3.18 ERA) against McLean (1-2, 2.78 ERA). The Tigers’ best chance to avoid another late swing from New York starts with whether Montero can hold the line early and make Wednesday’s 10th-inning disappointment stay in the past.
