Tigers chase – Detroit heads into the Sunday rubber match at Comerica Park after a 2-1, 10-inning loss to Toronto tied the series. Jack Flaherty gets the start for the Tigers as he tries to lengthen outings, while Kevin Gausman looks to rebound from a rough start when the Bl
The Tigers came up short again in extra innings on Saturday afternoon. dropping a 2-1 decision in 10 innings at Comerica Park.. With the weekend series tied. Detroit is now set for a Sunday rubber match. and the urgency is clear: the offense failed to break through. and the bullpen simply did not have enough left to keep Toronto from holding on until the bats finally woke up.
Sunday afternoon’s matchup pairs right-hander Jack Flaherty against Kevin Gausman.. Flaherty is scheduled for his 10th start of the season. and his struggles to go deep have been a major concern.. In the past five games. he has made it past the 3 2/3 innings mark just once. posting a 7.64 ERA and a 6.32 FIP over 17 2/3 frames.
Flaherty has seen Toronto twice before, and the results were far more encouraging.. In one start last season on July 27. he threw six innings of scoreless ball on six hits and one walk. striking out seven to earn the win.. The other outing. on May 16. saw him go 5 2/3 innings. allow a pair of runs on five hits (including one home run). and strike out six for a win.
For Toronto, Gausman is taking the hill after what was his worst start of the season last time out. The 35-year-old gave up seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits, including one home run, and issued no walks while striking out five Tampa Bay Rays batters in 4 1/3 innings for the loss.
Gausman has also faced Detroit in the past and has shown he can be sharp at Comerica.. Last summer on July 27. he delivered six frames of one-hit. shutout ball. walking one and striking out 10. finishing with a no-decision in the team win.. Detroit will be hoping that recent history doesn’t follow him into his start this Sunday afternoon.
The weekend picture ties together the same problem Detroit has been trying to solve: Saturday ended with a 2-1 loss in 10 innings. the offense “failed to show up. ” and Flaherty’s current stretch is marked by difficulty reaching the 3 2/3 inning threshold—while Toronto’s recent rough outing came in a start that still produced strikeouts but ended with seven runs allowed.
