Through 2 games, Christian Gonzalez is living up to his record-breaking contract

Christian Gonzalez couldn’t help but flash a smile while up at the podium after the Patriots’ 20-3 win over the Steelers on Sunday.
Granted, the 24-year-old cornerback has plenty of reasons to be happy these days, considering he signed a four-year, $135 million contract extension with New England earlier this month — the largest deal ever handed out to a cornerback.
But on Sunday, Gonzalez’s smile was rooted in a question he was posed after the game — concerning when he knew he was going to be tasked with shutting down Steelers star wideout D.K. Metcalf.
“I mean, I think you know,” Gonzalez responded. “Soon as I see the schedule.”
As New England’s top player on defense and now the highest paid cornerback in the league, Gonzalez is seemingly welcoming every opportunity to validate his standing as the NFL’s premier cover corner.
And amid an uneven start to the 2026 season, the Patriots have had no second-guessing or concerns over whether or not Gonzalez was worth the hefty contract he inked this month.
Because through two games, Gonzalez has far and away been New England’s most impactful player — and arguably the top corner in the league.
In what ended up being a miserable afternoon for Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers’ offense, Gonzalez served as a consistent thorn in Pittsburgh’s side — negating Metcalf throughout the contest in Foxborough.
As noted by NBC Sports Boston, Gonzalez matched up against Metcalf on 34 snaps on Sunday — with the 6-foot-4 wideout only recording three catches for 11 yards, two of which came off screen passes behind the line of scrimmage.
“Had a fun matchup,” Gonzalez said. “It is always fun seeing their best guy and just going out there and competing. That’s what you love as a corner. Being a corner is just going out there, playing ball and competing against the best.
“It only helps me get better. [I’ll be] able to get in the film room and watch it and see what I can do against somebody like him, somebody that is a stronger receiver, learn from it and move on.”
Without Metcalf being freed up as Pittsburgh’s go-to explosive target downfield, Rodgers and the Steelers were stuck in neutral — gaining just 235 total yards of offense, including just one play over 20 yards.
“I don’t think he had a lot of fun at all,” Patriots safety Kevin Byard said of Metcalf. “I don’t know how many catches he had, but it wasn’t a whole lot. And I think anytime I’m lined up in the post and I see Gonzo out there at number one or on the outside, I have full confidence that I don’t really need to give him any help.”
Even though New England came up short in its Week 1 game against the Seahawks, Gonzalez largely did his part in his 1-on-1 matchups against arguably the best wideout in the league, Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
While Smith-Njigba did torch New England’s defense in zone via a 45-yard touchdown, he didn’t have as much success when directly matched up against Gonzalez. As Nick Goss of NBC Sports Boston noted, Gonzalez has surrendered just five receptions for 24 yards on 13 targets across 72 coverage snaps through two weeks.
The Patriots still have plenty of work to do, especially when it comes to overcoming injuries and getting Drake Maye and the offense back on track.
But New England hasn’t had to fret over Gonzalez and whether or not he’s up to the task of anchoring this defense in 2026 and beyond.
“Gonzo wants those challenges,” Mike Vrabel said. “You can see the competitive spirit. And again, when we talk about being the most physical unit that translates, you see the physical stab and being able to cover. I love the fact that sometimes they catch the football on you, and he comes right back and challenges.”
