Threads DM push: Meta eyes “lurking” users

Meta is expanding Threads messaging on the web, betting DMs will keep users engaged and shift activity from feeds to private chats.
Threads is betting that “lurking” in the feed can be turned into direct conversations, as Meta rolls out web-based messaging designed to move activity into DMs.
Starting Tuesday. Threads users on the web will be able to message people and join group chats. expanding a feature that first appeared on mobile earlier this year.. Meta’s head of Threads. Connor Hayes. framed the update as a practical way for power users who often log in from their computers to send targeted messages to mutuals and participate in group conversations.
This matters because DMs reward different behavior than public posts: instead of building a public audience, they help platforms retain users who prefer staying private.
Meta also linked the push to how Threads is being used day to day.. Misryoum reports that the company says messaging activity is rising. with weekly sends measured in the hundreds of millions and per-user messaging growing since the start of the year.. The company’s broader view is that more users are moving away from public posting and toward smaller. private group chats where conversations feel more personal.
In this context, DMs can be more than a communication tool.. Hayes described messaging as a way to keep people coming back to the app. since a DM can prompt users to open Threads to see content they trust is worth their attention.. Misryoum notes that this “trust loop” is especially important for platforms competing for time in an always-on digital feed.
For businesses and advertisers, the shift is significant even when messages themselves are free: higher engagement generally supports more opportunities for recommendations and platform growth.
Under the hood, Meta also sees potential to strengthen recommendations based on activity that happens within inboxes.. Hayes suggested Threads could build additional features over time that resemble engagement patterns seen on Instagram DMs. where recipients who keep browsing without leaving the conversation can be met with more recommended content.
Misryoum understands the company’s messaging strategy as part of a larger push to win users and stay culturally relevant.. Threads launched as part of Meta’s Instagram ecosystem and has been scaling fast. while also facing competition from other social platforms.. Hayes said the goal is to keep building Threads’ momentum. including hiring for product leadership that will focus on how the service can become a category leader. particularly in the United States.
Overall. Meta’s Threads DM expansion is less about changing what people can say and more about changing where they spend their time.. If Misryoum’s report reflects user behavior accurately. the “lurking to chatting” transition could be a key engine for longer sessions. deeper engagement. and a stronger platform ecosystem.
