There’s a particular kind of thrill that comes from watching a chase steamroll everything in its path—plans collapsing mid-motion, danger spreading fast, and every minute feeling like it could be the last.

That’s the energy Apple TV brings to The Last Frontier. a 10-episode American thriller that leans hard into the kind of high-octane momentum fans associate with films like The Fugitive and 2020’s Extraction.. If you’re used to the hair-raising twists of those movies—one famously a 1990s action standout with Harrison Ford and seven Oscar nominations. the other powered by Chris Hemsworth’s brand of nonstop intensity—The Last Frontier is built for the same kind of bingeable adrenaline.

The series comes from executive producer Sam Hargrave, who also directed Extraction.. It debuted on the streamer last October. setting the tone with an immediate disaster in the snowy outskirts of Fairbanks. Alaska.. U.S.. Marshal Frank Remnick (Jason Clarke) is on the ground when dangerous inmates are loaded onto a prison transport airplane—then. soon after takeoff. the plane crashes.. Survivors scatter, and what follows is a run through freezing, unforgiving terrain.

Frank’s job is clear: recapture as many inmates as he can while limiting the danger to people living nearby.. It’s not a clean mission.. He and his team run into “some of the most brutal criminals ever. ” and the pressure rises further when an enigmatic CIA agent named Sidney Scofield (Haley Bennett) also comes to town.

Sidney isn’t just interested in the chaos—she’s looking for a specific survivor.. There was a CIA asset named Havlock (Dominic Cooper) who survives the plane crash. and Sidney asks Frank for help locating him.. As Frank’s efforts to hunt fugitives and Sidney’s drive to find Havlock collide. the series expands both character stories and the backstories of some of the escaped inmates still on the loose.

The pattern the show sets is simple and relentless: the prison transport plane crash produces fugitives to chase. Frank’s responsibility grows as he tries to stop the threat from spreading. and Sidney’s arrival turns that manhunt into something more targeted—because Havlock also survived the crash and becomes the thread pulling their journeys together.

Part of why The Last Frontier lands as a distraction from reality is how firmly it leans into Alaska as spectacle.. The cinematography treats the frigid landscape like a presence in the series. constantly reminding viewers of what’s at stake in the weather alone—because there are “a lot of elements that can kill characters. even without murderous convicts on the lam.” The effects. too. get singled out. especially the plane crash scene. described as being on par with big-screen spectacle.

The action sequences are another major selling point.. The fight scenes are presented as believable. and viewers are encouraged to expect the tension of holding your breath while they play out.. On top of the physical danger. the series also packs in mysteries—particularly around why Sidney is so desperate to capture Havlock.. Twists keep the high-stakes momentum fun to watch. with the story’s momentum built around answers arriving too late to feel fully safe.

Jason Clarke’s performance as a hardened protagonist is where much of the character pull comes from.. He’s described as someone who isn’t afraid to break some laws if it means catching the bad guys. and the series leans into quieter moments with Bennett and Simone Kessell. who plays Frank’s beleaguered wife.. The fugitives also get spotlight time. with Damian Young. Clifton Collins Jr.. Rusty Schwimmer. and Johnny Knoxville making the most of their limited on-screen presence.

Beyond the central cast, Alfre Woodard and John Slattery pop up as colleagues of Sidney’s, and the story frames their appearances as potentially secret-heavy—set to affect Havlock’s recapture.

Fans seemed to respond to the series. but it met an unexpected fate: The Last Frontier was surprisingly cancelled after its first season.. Even so, it continued to do well on the streaming charts, making the cancellation feel even more disappointing to viewers.. With just 10 episodes, it still ends up positioned as a quick binge-watch worth your time.
