Terrifying scenes at Notre Dame football game as police hunt suspect after shooting on campus
Reports of gunfire on the campus of the University of Notre Dame caused chaos as tens of thousands of fans gathered for a college football game.
The incident, which did not take place near the stadium, came on the same day that over 75,000 fans gathered for a rivalry game against Michigan State.
Students were informed with a text message from the ND Alert notification system.
‘After gunfire in the Eddy Street Commons area, the suspected gunman was last seen on the south edge of campus,’ the alert said. ‘Police are actively searching for the suspect.’
The alert added, ‘People inside the Stadium should stay inside the Stadium, others should shelter in place.’
The alert described the suspect as ‘a Black male, heavy-set, blue shorts, black shirt and one white shoe.’

The game was not effected by the order and the suspect left the campus area
Nearly half an hour later, the alert system sent an update: ‘There have been no further incidents of violence. Further investigations indicate that the suspect fled the campus area. Police investigations continue.’
The reported shooting did not have any effect on the game being played between the Fighting Irish and the Spartans.
The initial alert came roughly an hour into the game which marked the 80th playing of their rivalry.
Saturday’s game was the first time the two teams faced each other in nine years, with Notre Dame winning the last battle for the Megaphone Trophy.
At halftime of the game, the third-ranked Fighting Irish were leading Michigan State 17-10.
