Storm Adam Batters Spanish Coast, Leaving Two Dead and Thousands Displaced

Storm Adam has brought widespread destruction to eastern and southern Spain, resulting in two fatalities, extensive flooding, and widespread travel disruptions. The severe weather system marks the first named storm of the 2026-2027 season.
A 55-year-old woman lost her life on Sunday night after going swimming with a man at Almardà Beach in Sagunto, located about 30 minutes from Valencia. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency had previously issued an amber weather warning for the region due to heavy rainfall and strong winds. The man, a Dutch national, managed to swim back to shore and alerted emergency services at approximately 8pm. A large-scale search and rescue operation was immediately launched, utilizing a maritime rescue helicopter and coast guard units. Rescuers ultimately recovered the woman’s body at the nearby Canes d’en Berenguer beach.
This incident followed another tragedy on Saturday night, when a 35-year-old woman was swept away in Cabrera de Mar, roughly 27 kilometers north of Barcelona. The victim had attempted to cross a surging river with her children. Her partner jumped into the water and successfully rescued their child, but the mother was carried away by the powerful current. Her body was later discovered washed up near a port close to Barcelona, according to local newspaper reports. These fatalities arrive just weeks after two additional people died in the Catalonia region following a separate severe weather event at the beginning of the month.
Since Saturday, torrential showers and powerful thunderstorms have lashed Spain’s Levante region alongside parts of the Balearic Islands. Ibiza experienced severe flooding over the weekend, prompting authorities to close the island’s main airport twice. On Sunday, Ibiza was placed under a red weather alert—the highest level of warning—after dropping 60 liters of rain per square metre in a single hour. Social media footage captured water pouring through leaks in the terminal’s roof, while airfield areas were inundated. The extreme weather forced the cancellation of 27 flights and diverted another 16, while residents and visitors across the island experienced power outages. Emergency personnel carried out numerous water pumping operations in garages and car parks throughout Ibiza.

On Monday, weather alerts warning of significant danger remained active across several regions, including Barcelona, Murcia, southern Ronda, northern and southern Valencia, and the islands of Mallorca, Formentera, and Ibiza. In Cabrera de Mar, local officials declared Monday as an official day of mourning for the mother swept away by the river, and residents observed a minute of silence in her honor.
The storm arrives on the heels of a difficult summer that saw devastating wildfires sweep through several regions in Spain, including Valencia. Forecasters indicate that Storm Adam is expected to subside over the coming days.
