Steve Kerr deal keeps Warriors coach for two years

Steve Kerr has agreed to a new two-year deal to remain Golden State’s head coach, ending speculation about his future.
Steve Kerr’s future in Golden State is no longer a question mark. The Warriors reached an agreement with Kerr that keeps him in charge and—according to reports—locks in his spot as the league’s highest-paid coach.
On Saturday evening. ESPN senior NBA insider Shams Charania reported that Kerr signed a two-year deal with the Golden State Warriors.. The report also said the agreement will keep him at the top end of coaching salaries. while negotiations reportedly involved weeks of direct discussion between the team and Kerr.
Charania said the news was shared with him by Dan Eveloff and Rick Smith of Priority Sports. along with ESPN colleagues Ramona Shelburne and Anthony Slater.. The timing and the length of the process suggest the Warriors treated the decision as more than routine contract business. with “three weeks of extensive conversations” described as a key part of reaching terms.
While the specifics of the new contract were not disclosed. ESPN noted Kerr earned $17.5 million last season as Golden State’s head coach.. That figure. and the claim that he will remain the league’s top-paid coach. underscores how firmly the Warriors intend to anchor their basketball direction around Kerr.
The retention of Kerr is also significant because of what he has already done in Golden State. During his tenure, he guided the franchise to four championships, and that record has long shaped the way the Warriors organize their coaching stability and roster construction decisions.
For Golden State, keeping Kerr in place is closely tied to another centerpiece: Stephen Curry. Reports framed the deal as a major step in maintaining continuity for Curry, and it may also matter for how the Warriors approach recruiting or pursuing high-profile players in future trade talks.
The timing arrives amid ongoing league speculation about the Warriors’ potential offseason moves.. In particular. there has been talk that Golden State could become involved in trade discussions connected to Giannis Antetokounmpo. with the Milwaukee Bucks previously mentioned as a possible trading partner.
Other star names have also surfaced in connection with potential moves. Donovan Mitchell of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Kawhi Leonard of the Los Angeles Clippers have both been discussed as players who could factor into the equation if Golden State decides to add more impact talent around its core.
The Warriors’ recent season has made the decision feel even more consequential. Golden State’s 2025-26 campaign did not go as hoped, including the loss of multi-time All-Star Jimmy Butler after he suffered a season-ending torn right ACL injury.
Injuries continued to shape the team’s path. Moses Moody also went down for the season with a ruptured left patellar tendon, a development that further narrowed the options available to the Warriors as the schedule unfolded.
Stephen Curry, another crucial piece, missed a significant stretch of games due to a lingering knee injury concern. He later returned toward the end of the regular season, including time to participate in the play-in tournament.
Even with those late-season returns, the Warriors did not qualify for the NBA playoffs. Still, some observers believe that with Kerr coaching and Curry at the center of the roster, Golden State could compete moving forward—potentially by increasing its star power during the offseason.
Kerr’s track record helps explain why the organization appears comfortable doubling down on him even after a disappointing year. He has coached the Warriors since 2014, compiling a 604-353 record and four championship rings—the most of any currently active head coach, according to the report.
For the Warriors. the deal also signals a broader message about their identity after a difficult stretch: rather than pivoting away from the system Kerr built. the team is choosing to keep its leadership framework intact.. That could reduce uncertainty for players and front office decision-making. especially as trade windows and free-agent evaluations begin to take center stage.
