Steam Controller Basegrip turns your phone into a portable setup

Misryoum: A new Basegrip accessory lets you mount a phone on the Steam Controller for Steam Link gaming on the go.

A new accessory aims to make Valve’s upcoming Steam Controller feel a lot closer to a handheld, by turning your phone into the missing centerpiece.

Misryoum reports that Mechanism’s Basegrip for the Steam Controller is designed to match the controller’s new form factor. Paired with the company’s phone mount, the setup lets you attach a smartphone to the gamepad, creating a portable way to play while you’re on the move.

In practice, the idea is simple: use the Steam Link app to stream your Steam library, then control playback through the Steam Controller. Mechanism notes that Steam Link support isn’t universal across every Android and iOS device yet, so compatibility may depend on what you’re using.

This matters because it extends the “where and how” of PC gaming without requiring a dedicated handheld device. If you already own a capable phone, accessories like this can lower the barrier to couch-to-commute-style play.

Misryoum adds that the Basegrip isn’t limited to the phone-mount use case. It’s also planned to work with Mechanism’s upcoming Steam Controller dock, which is intended to stand the controller upright for display while charging it.

The accessory lineup is rolling out in stages.. The Basegrip is set to launch on the same day as the Steam Controller’s sales start. and Mechanism says you’ll be able to download 3D-print files for a free version.. Alongside that, the phone mount is sold separately, and the dock is expected to follow later.

If you have a 3D printer, the ability to download files for the Basegrip and a “stripped down Dock” could be especially appealing for tinkering tinkerers and budget-minded players. Meanwhile, even without printing, the product approach signals a growing ecosystem around the Steam Controller.

At the end of the day, this is less about replacing a handheld and more about letting the Steam Controller stay useful across more setups. That portability-first thinking is likely to matter as more gamers mix streaming, mobile hardware, and controller-first play.
