Starc Impact Boosts DC Mid-Season, Says Ian Bell

DC assistant coach Ian Bell praises Mitchell Starc’s mid-season return and highlights KL Rahul’s leadership ahead of the IPL clash in Dharamshala.

Mitchell Starc’s mid-season arrival has turned into more than just a bowling addition for Delhi Capitals, with assistant coach Ian Bell calling it “amazing to have him around” as the team looks ahead to its next IPL challenge in Dharamshala.

Speaking to reporters on the eve of Delhi Capitals’ match against Punjab Kings at the HPCA Cricket Stadium. Bell said Starc’s presence has brought invaluable experience and quality to the squad.. He pointed to Starc’s proven ability on the biggest stages. noting that the skill set was already well established through earlier performances and that having him join partway through the season has been a significant boost.

Bell acknowledged that the coaching staff would have preferred Starc to be available from the start of the IPL season.. However, he said injuries were the reason his involvement came later, delaying the timing of his impact.. The assistant coach framed the wait as an unfortunate reality of professional cricket. even as he emphasized the value of his eventual return.

Beyond wickets, Bell stressed that Starc’s contribution reaches into mentorship across the group. He said Starc offers guidance not only to younger bowlers but also to batters, reflecting a wider professional influence in how the squad prepares, practices, and approaches elite-level cricket.

In training, Bell described Starc as working “at full tilt,” setting a strong example during practice sessions.. He said Starc does not reduce intensity through nets and drills. and that the way top players prepare becomes a live benchmark for others—creating learning value not limited to the bowling unit.

Starc’s IPL 2026 involvement began after his recovery from injury, with his first appearance coming against Rajasthan Royals on May 1, midway through the tournament. Bell’s comments came just days after that return, as Delhi Capitals prepares for its clash with Punjab Kings in Himachal Pradesh.

Bell also used the pre-match moment to look at the broader balance of Delhi Capitals’ performances. saying DC have not always given Starc enough runs to create the kind of match-changing impact the team would have hoped for in recent games.. He described it as disappointing from Delhi’s perspective that the batting outcomes in the last couple of matches did not allow Starc to influence matches with the ball as much as possible.

Meanwhile, the assistant coach turned his attention to KL Rahul, praising his mindset and leadership with the bat.. Bell said Rahul continues to look for ways to improve even as an established performer. describing a constant drive to refine his thinking and approach rather than relying solely on reputation.

According to Bell, Rahul’s value comes from more than scoring—his understanding of the game and his work ethic in training have helped set a tone within the squad. He described Rahul as a pleasure to be around and said the batter has led Delhi Capitals from the front with his approach in batting.

Bell’s comments also included a candid assessment of the team’s batting inconsistency. He said Delhi has produced explosive totals in some matches, but the side has also suffered dramatic collapses in others, a pattern that becomes increasingly difficult to sustain at the top level.

He argued that this variability leaves little room for error. stressing that scoring 260 in one match and then getting bowled out for 70 in the next is not the kind of fluctuation teams can afford in the IPL.. In that framing. Bell suggested Rahul’s presence highlights the need for more reliable support from the rest of the batting unit.

The contrast Bell drew aligns with Rahul’s current form in the tournament.. He has enjoyed a strong IPL 2026 campaign, currently sitting third in the Orange Cap standings with 468 runs from 11 innings.. Bell’s remarks about leadership and improvement also mirror what the numbers indicate: Rahul has averaged 46.80 while maintaining a strike rate of 180.00.

For Delhi Capitals. the pairing of Rahul’s stability at the top with the return of a high-end specialist like Starc creates a clear pathway—strengthening both the batting spine and the bowling edge—though the challenge remains translating those advantages into consistently match-winning totals and match-impact spells.. As the team heads into its Punjab Kings fixture. Bell’s focus is unmistakable: maximize the influence of professionals like Starc. and tighten the batting consistency around Rahul so large scores do not evaporate into collapses.
