Spurs and Thunder collide as OKC faces Williams doubt

Spurs Thunder – San Antonio and Oklahoma City meet in the Western Conference Finals after both teams set the pace in the regular season. The Thunder roll in off an 8-0 playoff run and an explosive playoff offense, while the Spurs come in riding a tank-to-title-building story

It’s the matchup that feels like it should belong to the end of a dynasty—two teams built around young stars. set to write the first page of what could become a long-running rivalry.. The Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs open their Western Conference Finals series with the league’s future on full display. and only one of them will reach the NBA Finals.

Both sides owned the kind of regular-season resumes that raise eyebrows across the league.. They finished with the two best regular-season records and the top two net ratings. each carrying a case for dominance before a single possession is counted in this round.. And for every team watching from the outside. the idea that two of the league’s youngest cores are already this close to the top has the same chilling effect: there’s urgency to stop them now—because the window is only going to shrink.

The schedule starts Monday night in Oklahoma City.. Game 1: San Antonio at Oklahoma City, Mon.. May 18 at 8:30 p.m.. Game 2: San Antonio at Oklahoma City, Wed.. May 20 at 8:30 p.m.. Game 3: Oklahoma City at San Antonio, Fri.. May 22 at 8:30 p.m.. Game 4: Oklahoma City at San Antonio, Sun.. May 24 at 8 p.m.. Game 5: San Antonio at Oklahoma City, Tues.. May 26 at 8:30 p.m.. Game 6: Oklahoma City at San Antonio, Thurs.. May 28 at 8:30 p.m.. Game 7: San Antonio at Oklahoma City, Sat.. May 30 at 8 p.m.. Spurs fans also get a scoreboard head start: the season series went Spurs win 4-1.

Oklahoma City has entered the Conference Finals looking near unstoppable. chasing the franchise’s first repeat as champions since the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018.. The Thunder have an 8-0 playoff record, sweeping the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers.. Their margin has been striking as well.. Oklahoma City has averaged wins by 16.7 points in the playoffs, a step up from its regular-season average of 11.1 per game.

There’s a split in the numbers, though. Defensively, the Thunder aren’t matching their regular-season profile, carrying a 110.2 rating into the Conference Finals. Offensively, the jump is enormous: a 127.8 rating in these playoffs, the highest mark in NBA history over a playoff run.

At the center of it all is Gilgeous-Alexander, fresh off capturing his second straight MVP on Sunday.. His efficiency has been described as cutting through whatever the opposition tries.. Gilgeous-Alexander owns a 63.1 true-shooting percentage despite his steady diet of contested mid-range jumpers and acrobatic at-rim finishes.. That mark ranks as the fifth-highest all-time among guards to score at least 25 per game in at least eight games in a single playoff run. and he’s the only player on that list to shoot fewer than five threes per game.

Oklahoma City’s offense is also built around Chet Holmgren’s rim protection and spacing. Jalen Williams’ secondary creation and scoring. and the continued breakout of sophomore guard Ajay Mitchell.. With those pieces working in tandem, the Thunder have been treated as the obvious favorite to keep marching.

Still. this series turns on a specific worry: whether Jalen Williams can answer the injury concerns that followed him through the season and shaped his early postseason workload.. Much of the Thunder’s health story has been tied to the absence of All-NBA wing Jalen Williams. who suited up for only 33 regular-season contests this year.. The Thunder also navigated a stretch involving the third-most team games missed due to injuries.

In the first round, the picture tightened further.. Oklahoma City cruised to a perfect record in the playoffs without Williams. and he only played in Games 1 and 2 after suffering a hamstring strain.. Entering this series. he is listed as available. but that hasn’t erased the concern: if he can’t move at full speed. the Spurs may try to build their game around that opening.

Even with the Thunder’s scoring power, the stats make the matchup feel personal.. Through regular season meetings against San Antonio, Jalen Williams averaged 16.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 5.3 assists.. The offensive rating also shifts depending on his presence: Oklahoma City has a 121.6 offensive rating with Williams and a 117.1 rating without.. The gap isn’t huge, but in a seven-game series against the Spurs, “every little bit counts” has real meaning.

San Antonio’s side of the story runs through the same patience that once looked like a gamble.. The Spurs have returned to the postseason for the first time since 2019. powered by a run that started after years of intentional rebuilding.. The foundation of that rebuilding is well-known: four years ago. the Spurs embarked on a tank of a lifetime—actually the second of their lifetime after lucking out in 1997 to nab Tim Duncan—to grab Victor Wembanyama.. Then they did it again to secure Stephon Castle. and then they did it again to get Dylan Harper. with the lottery balls falling in their favour.

Rarely, the story goes, does tanking create a contender.. In San Antonio’s case. though. the results arrived faster than anyone expected. with the Spurs now positioned as a preemptive force other than the Thunder “for years to come.” Their early window is part of what makes this feel different: not a single member of that trio has yet to sign even their rookie extensions.

What makes the Spurs’ current run feel so cohesive is how they’ve connected top picks to an actual playing identity.. Wembanyama’s talent is obvious. but the Spurs have been described as having done their best to build a contending team around him.. The playoffs have validated that speed.. San Antonio powered through the Portland Trail Blazers in five and the giant-killing Minnesota Timberwolves in six.

There’s also a sense that the Spurs are refusing to follow old postseason rules. The usual idea—earn your battle scars before truly contending—hasn’t shaped their approach. Led by Wembanyama, the Spurs have been presented as a team built on breaking conventions.

One of those conventions involves how Wembanyama handles setbacks.. The 22-year-old has formed a habit of coming second.. He arrived on the scene in 2021 at the FIBA U19 World Cup and lost to Chet Holmgren and the U.S.. in the gold-medal game.. At the Paris Olympics in 2024, he was unable to defend home court in the gold-medal game against the States.. In the NBA Cup final this season, he lost to the New York Knicks.. And most recently, he lost to Gilgeous-Alexander in MVP voting.

There is emotion attached to those moments.. The story of the Spurs this year includes a claim that no player has shown as much emotion as Wembanyama this season. and no player seems more willing to “don the cape” as the face of the league.. After another loss—this time to SGA for MVP—he’ll be expected to carry that weight into a series where he’ll be asked to defend and attack all at once.

Even so, the Spurs’ wins over OKC this year don’t point to Wembanyama alone as the driver. In five games against the Thunder, he averaged only 18.4 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.2 blocks. For OKC, that matters, because it suggests the Spurs’ edge may come from more than just one matchup.

The same goes for how Oklahoma City plans to stay dangerous without relying solely on its MVP-level star.. Jalen Williams’ absence has forced the Thunder to develop other gears.. That’s where Ajay Mitchell enters the spotlight.. Mitchell. a Belgian sophomore out of UC Santa Barbara who averaged only 6.5 points in 36 games last season. has become one of OKC’s most important pieces in the absence of Williams.. The 23-year-old averaged 13.6 points in the regular season and has turned it up in the playoffs. scoring 18.8 points per game as a key secondary ball-handler and point-of-attack defender.

His usage could drop when Williams returns. but the argument for OKC is that depth has already been built for this kind of moment.. Oklahoma City did a great job last year using its depth. and the expectation is for the same approach this time. spearheaded by Mitchell as one of this season’s most out-of-nowhere breakouts.

Still, the defensive assignment feels just as central as the offensive one.. Shutting down Gilgeous-Alexander becomes the series’ biggest task for San Antonio, and Castle is set to carry that responsibility.. In the regular season. Castle held the MVP to 24 points in 109.9 partial possessions and an unseemly 31.6 per cent from the field.

Castle’s versatility is presented as a key factor in how San Antonio can handle the Thunder’s size and matchups.. If Oklahoma City looks to force the switch and get Jalen Williams onto Castle. he has also shown proficiency guarding up.. The story points to recent work in the second round. where Castle shut down Julius Randle. holding him to only 16 points in 133.9 partial possessions and 32 per cent from the field.

With San Antonio’s playoff defense described as the sword, Wembanyama is framed as the hilt, and Castle as the blade thrust aimed at the opposition. The implication is clear in the way their roles are laid out: Castle will need to be sharp against OKC.

The relationship across these details sits in the way one question feeds the rest: Oklahoma City’s offense has powered through the playoffs with a 127.8 rating. but it can soften from 121.6 with Williams to 117.1 without. while San Antonio’s ability to slow Gilgeous-Alexander has a measurable anchor in Castle’s 24-point. 31.6 per cent regular-season limit on 109.9 partial possessions.

For the Thunder. the series rests on whether Jalen Williams can be the same contributor after a hamstring strain and a first-round window limited to Games 1 and 2. even if he is listed as available.. For the Spurs. it’s about turning a history of coming second into something louder. using a defense built around Castle to put pressure on the player who has already collected MVP hardware—while Wembanyama tries to make sure this time. the story doesn’t end in the runner-up position again.
