Spirit Airlines begins wind-down, cancels all flights

Spirit Airlines says it is shutting down operations and canceling all flights, leaving travelers and staff scrambling for refunds and alternatives.

Spirit Airlines is beginning an orderly wind-down of operations immediately, and all flights scheduled for Saturday have been canceled, the airline said.

In a message posted on its website. Spirit told customers that all flights were canceled and that customer service was no longer available.. Spirit said its last flight. Spirit 1833 from Detroit to Dallas. arrived just after midnight early Saturday. and that it was working to get more than 1. 300 crew members safely back to their home bases.. The airline also indicated that it began winding down with no additional funding available. pointing to increased oil prices and other pressures.

The abrupt halt is a reminder of how quickly air travel plans can collapse when a carrier runs out of runway, and how little buffer many passengers have when a budget airline disappears from a route.

The timing also raised concerns about communication, with the airline saying that most employees learned of the closure primarily through media reports. At the same time, data showing Spirit’s planned schedule was effectively erased as those flights were canceled.

As the situation unfolds, the federal government role in efforts to preserve the airline remains unclear.. President Donald Trump said earlier that an announcement about a potential rescue deal was possible. while also indicating the administration would only proceed if it involved a “good deal.” Spirit. for its part. declined to comment on ongoing discussions. even as other carriers said they are preparing to support travelers who may be stranded.

This matters beyond the airline industry: when a low-cost carrier shuts down suddenly, it can reduce competition on popular routes, which can translate into higher prices and fewer options for many travelers.

Spirit. which filed for bankruptcy for a second time last August as it sought to restructure. has said rising jet fuel costs significantly impacted its financial outlook.. Travel experts have previously warned that a second bankruptcy within a short period can be especially destabilizing. particularly when costs remain high.

For travelers. Spirit advised people not to go to the airport and said refunds would be issued automatically for tickets purchased directly with a credit or debit card to the original payment method.. Passengers who booked through a travel agent were told to contact the agent directly.. The airline said compensation for other payment methods. including vouchers. credits. or Free Spirit points. would be handled later through the bankruptcy process.

In this kind of scenario, the practical path forward often depends on how the ticket was purchased. While some customers may be able to dispute charges or seek relief through their payment providers, others may have to wait as creditors are evaluated in bankruptcy.

At the same time. travel experts noted that canceling a scheduled trip immediately can affect refund eligibility. and that keeping documentation may be important if a charge needs to be contested.. For those who end up stranded. checking for emergency options with other airlines. including fare caps or assistance arrangements. may be the fastest way to resume travel while the bankruptcy process plays out.
