Sources: Stephen Curry, Warriors agree to $116 million contract extension

The Golden State Warriors and superstar guard Stephen Curry have agreed to a two-year, $116 million max contract extension, league sources told ClutchPoints on Friday evening. This new extension, which pays the Warriors’ legend an annual average value of $58 million, keeps him under contract with the franchise through the 2028-29 NBA season.

“We couldn’t be more excited about reaching an agreement with Stephen and extending his historic career with the Warriors,” general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. said in the team’s statement. “There has never been a better face to a franchise in professional sports history, both on and off the court, than Stephen Curry with the Warriors. He embodies everything this organization strives to represent through his legendary play on the court, his unique leadership and sacrifice, and his unmatched impact in the community.

“We’ve been incredibly blessed to experience 17 years of Stephen’s artistry and are thrilled that our fans will continue to have the opportunity to watch him perform and write additional chapters to his illustrious history.”

Entering the final year of his contract, the Warriors made it their mission, as soon as he become extension eligible to engage in extension talks with Steph and his representation to finalize a new agreement. The Warriors were willing to give Curry whatever deal he wanted, putting the ball in his court to decide whether to take the full max extension he was eligible for or potentially wait and take a discount.

The Warriors did offer Curry the full $136.7 million contract extension that he was eligible for, but the face of Golden State ultimately decided it was in everyone’s best interest for him to take a slight discount, sources said. This follows a similar move made by Jalen Brunson previously with the New York Knicks, and Victor Wembanyama this offseason with the San Antonio Spurs.

Curry, 38, has made it clear over the years and in the week leading up to training camp this offseason that he intends on remaining with the Warriors and finish his illustrious career with the organization that has become synonymous with his name.

As he prepared for his 18th year in the league, Curry now adds two more years to his current contract, where he will be 40 years old at the start of his 20th year with the Warriors.

This new $116 million contract is roughly $20 million less than a max extension he could’ve received this offseason. Curry mentioned recently how he wasn’t letting extension talks dictate his offseason or hang over the franchise entering training camp, stating that everything would happen at the right time.

“I don’t want there to be no drama,” Curry said recently. “No talking points. This team should be competitive and go win.”

“It’s going to happen at the right time, once I have all the information I need to make the decision that is right.”

Ultimately, instead of waiting until next summer when he would hit unrestricted free agency, Curry and the Warriors lock themselves into a new $116 million contract that runs through the 2028-29 season.

Golden State is still projected to have significant cap space to make drastic roster moves next offseason even after Curry’s extension.

Never a doubt on new Curry extension

Before he became eligible for this extension on Aug. 29, Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. expressed confidence in the team’s ability to get a contract done with their two-time MVP.

“There’s two things I’m confident about with Steph. He really, really wants to win, and he wants to finish his career as a Warrior. I don’t think that changes tomorrow, Aug. 29, start of the season, middle of the season, end of next season. Those things are going to be consistent.

“I’m pretty confident Steph will finish his career here.”

Even owner Joe Lacob wasn’t concerned about extension talks with Curry this offseason amid external noise about a potential trade, calling all of those rumors nothing but “clickbait.”

Despite Golden State’s struggles in recent years and missing the playoffs during the 2025-26 season, Curry and the team remain on the same page. Head coach Steve Kerr is back after signing a new two-year deal this offseason, and the Warriors still believe they can be a competitive team in the Western Conference at full strength.

However, the first few months of the 2026-27 season will paint a clearer picture of what the immediate future of the franchise looks like, especially with Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody recovering from significant knee injuries. The Warriors are operating with a patient approach entering the new season and will lean on their depth around Curry.

Along with Draymond Green returning on a one-year, $27.7 million contract, Golden State also brought back Kristaps Porzingis, De’Anthony Melton, Al Horford, and Gary Payton II on new contracts. Rookie first-round pick Yaxel Lendeborg will also hold a key role for the Warriors in the absence of Butler and Moody.

During the 2025-26 season, Curry’s 17th with the Warriors, he averaged 26.6 points and 4.7 assists per game while shooting 46.8% from the floor and 39.3% from 3-point range in 43 games. This was Steph’s 14th straight year averaging at least 20 points per game, tying him with Shaquille O’Neal and Carmelo Anthony for the 7th most consecutive years averaging at least 20 points.

Unfortunately, Curry’s season was cut short to only 43 games due to patellofemoral pain syndrome in his right knee. As a result, he missed over two months of action, missing all of the team’s games in February and March. He returned to the court April 5 before postseason play began and was the main factor in Golden State’s play-in tournament win over the LA Clippers.

Curry scored 35 points on 7-of-12 shooting from 3-point range to lift the Warriors to a 126-121 win over the Clippers in the 9-seed vs. 10-seed game. The Warriors would go on to lose to the Phoenix Suns in their next game, resulting in them failing to reach the playoffs for the second time in the last three seasons.

The good news for Steph and the Warriors is that his knee issues appear to be a thing of the past and won’t hinder his play entering the 2026-27 season. Still, the Warriors will monitor his health and take extra precaution with the 38-year-old during the first half of the season, including when it comes to always playing in back-to-backs.

Curry, a 12-time NBA All-Star, four-time champion, two-time scoring champion, and the only unanimous MVP in league history, has made it clear with this new two-year extension that he is not leaving the Warriors and intends to do everything he can to try and win one more championship before the end of his career.
