Sock Hop returns: Brookside’s Swing Night May 22

The public is invited to a Sock Hop.
The Brookwood Music Department is hosting its 16th annual Swing Night on Friday, May 22.
“This event is open to the community and is family friendly,” said Derrick Turi, the Brookswood Secondary School music director.
This year’s theme is Sock Hop, a tribute to the music of the 1950s and ’60s.
The music of that era was known for getting people up out of their seats and onto the dance floor.
The informal dance parties that were typically held in school gyms would often see dancers remove their shoes and dance in their socks to protect the varnished floors, but people are not required to remove their footwear for this all-ages dance evening.
Turi said there will be lessons of dances from that era – specifically the Jive and the Twist.
Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the night will have dancing, food, swing dance lessons, and live music from the school’s award-winning jazz bands.
The evening is a partnership with the RockStepSwing Dance Society.
Advance tickets will be $8 students and $12 adults while all tickets are $15 dollars at the door.
The show is at the school, 20902 32A Ave.
For pre-sale ticket order forms including the choice of cheesecake flavour, see the music department or Brookswood school office during school hours.
The school’s music department includes students from Grades 5 to 12 and has four concert bands (1st year, 2nd year junior band, intermediate, and senior), two jazz bands (junior and senior), Musical Theater Orchestra, and Music Composition and Production.
In addition to showcasing the musical talents of the students, the event serves as a fundraiser for the department.
The school’s Senior Jazz Band earned a gold award at Whistler Cantando Music Festival.
The three-day festival April 30 to May 2 attracts bands, ensembles, orchestras, and choirs from around North America.
