Sky grind out ugly win over Valkyries

Sky grind – The Sky secured a 69-63 win by tightening defense, featuring Natasha Cloud’s return and late heroics from Rickea Jackson and Jacy Sheldon.

SAN FRANCISCO—The Sky made it look like a defensive contest rather than a shootout. pouring pressure on the Valkyries while their own offense sputtered through stretches.. Playing with the kind of grit that keeps games from slipping away. the Sky put the emphasis where it mattered most: they limited Golden State to 29.3% shooting overall and just 26.9% from three-point range.. The result was a 69-63 win on Wednesday night.

Golden State’s cold spell from long range became a major factor. especially given how frequently they generate looks from deep.. The Valkyries had been hitting over 40% from three on roughly 35 attempts per game. but on this night they went quiet. offering the Sky a narrow path to victory.. Still. the Sky’s perimeter pressure was not an afterthought; it tightened compared with the team’s earlier outing. helping swing the quality of Golden State’s possessions.

Veteran guard Natasha Cloud’s return helped shape that defensive focus. With Cloud back in the mix, the Sky improved their pressure along the perimeter, forcing the Valkyries to work harder for opportunities and disrupting the rhythm that typically fuels their outside shooting.

On the offensive end, however, the Sky leaned on resilience more than efficiency.. The trio of Skylar Diggins. Kamilla Cardoso. and Rickea Jackson—who had been more productive in earlier action—struggled to score through the first half.. Cardoso and Jackson combined to go 2-for-14 before the break. a stark contrast to the kind of scoring output a team needs to keep pace with a volume three-point attack.

The shooting struggles extended beyond the paint.. During the first half. the Sky were 0-for-10 from the field from three-point range and went 4-for-10 at the free-throw line.. It was an opening period where offense felt flat. and the game turned into a test of whether the Sky could maintain composure rather than chasing quick fixes.

Even with an uneven offensive stretch, the Sky stayed steady defensively, holding the Valkyries to 28 points in the first half. Guard Jacy Sheldon later described the approach in plain terms: when shots were not falling, the team continued to compete on defense, keeping the opponent within reach.

The second half did not instantly transform into a highlight reel for either team. but coach Tyler Marsh said the Sky’s effort grew.. He credited timely contributions during the moments when the margin tightened. pointing to the way the team continued to fight through its offensive challenges rather than letting them widen into a blowout.

A late fourth-quarter swing captured that idea.. With the Sky leading 60-58 and just under three minutes remaining. Golden State forced Jackson to pick up her dribble. and it appeared the Valkyries had a chance to create a broken-play advantage.. Instead, rookie Gabriela Jaquez stepped into a timely back cut, and Jackson found her for an easy layup.. The follow-up mattered, too: on the next trip down, Jackson hit a three-pointer—her first of the game.

Defense provided the icing on the fourth quarter as the game tilted toward the Sky.. After Jackson’s late scoring. Sheldon came up with a steal on the defensive end. converting pressure into momentum at precisely the right time.. The sequence reflected a theme that had defined the night: when the offense stalled. the Sky’s defense helped keep the game manageable until opportunities arrived.

Marsh said the win reflected the team’s identity taking shape.. He argued that the Sky should not treat their defensive performance as something automatic. emphasizing that when they put forth the effort they bring in the second half. they can overcome offensive struggles.. In his view. the ability to withstand a rough shooting night and still come out ahead is part of what separates an evolving team from one that unravels.

Sheldon framed the victory even more directly. saying the Sky have the kind of competitive mindset the program has been building toward.. He described the roster as filled with “dogs” and “ultra-competitors,” players who commit every game.. For a team that shot poorly and still won. that mentality looked less like a slogan and more like a blueprint on the road.

  1. I dont even watch womens basketball but my sister had this on and honestly it looked boring as hell no offense but 69 points total in a whole game is kinda sad right like even high school teams score more than that

  2. thats not how basketball works lol each team scored separately its not combined but yeah the shooting was rough i watched the second half and golden state just kept chucking threes and missing over and over it was painful honestly felt bad for them a little but also the Sky deserved it they worked hard out there defense wins games my dad always said that and he was right

  3. Wait so the Sky went 0 for 10 from three in the first half and still won?? That actually makes zero sense to me like how do you win shooting like that against a team that shoots 40 percent from deep every game something doesnt add up here I feel like the Valkyries just gave this one away honestly they probably had injuries or something the article doesnt mention that but thats probably what happened teams dont just go cold like that for no reason and golden state is a good squad so yeah im calling it injuries or maybe they were tired from traveling I dunno but this win feels fluky to me the Sky arent that good no disrespect
