Six-foot chunk of bridge sent into Charles River after hit-and-run crash

A hit-and-run Tuesday sent a six-foot chunk of a Boston bridge into the Charles River.

Around 12:50 p.m., a motor vehicle went onto the sidewalk and struck a wall on the River Street Bridge on Cambridge Street in Boston, according to Massachusetts State Police.

A 6-foot section of the wall fell into the river. No injuries were immediately reported, police said.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the crash was a sideswipe hit-and-run involving two vehicles, police said.

State police collected statements from witnesses and the investigation is ongoing, officials said.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation installed a temporary steel barrier on the bridge and an arrow board in the left lane to move drivers away from the broken wall, police said. The bridge is safe for traffic and an inspection is scheduled to assess the necessary repairs.
