Sierra Leone Battles Looming Cartel State Capture

Sierra Leone faces a critical juncture as reports link the nation to global drug trafficking, prompting urgent calls for reform to prevent state capture.

A Nation at the Crossroads: Resisting the Shadow of Cartel State Capture in Sierra Leone.. Osman Soura Kamara Esq.. Introduction When I heard that Spanish security forces had seized up to 45,000 kilos of pure cocaine tied to Sierra Leone, a deep worry for my country’s future took hold of me.. Silence, I realised, is complicity.. A dangerous tide is rising across our streets, ports, and borders, not from nature, but from shadowy networks, illicit

money, and drugs that poison our communities.. Drug cartels are no longer distant threats; they are now pressing in, inching ever closer to the heart of our nation.. International reports now warn that Sierra Leone is becoming a crucial crossroads for global drug trafficking, especially for cocaine and synthetic drugs.. What once seemed a distant risk has become a central artery in a dangerous global trade.. The evidence is alarming: Sierra Leone has been linked

to massive drug shipments, including six tonnes of cocaine seized in Europe and traced back to our shores.. This is no accident; it signals a deeper rot.. At home, the crisis is just as stark.. Police have logged hundreds of drug-related cases in a single year, while the synthetic drug known as “Kush” has devastated entire communities.. Nearly everyone touched by this scourge recognises it as a national emergency, with families and neighbourhoods reeling from

its impact.. This is more than a health crisis; it is a looming threat to our national security and a slow slide toward State Capture.. Such capture creeps in gradually, tightening its grip through influence, corruption, and whispered agreements.. It takes root when we hesitate to act and fail to protect the promise of our young people.. The warning signs are already flashing.. Reports alleged international drug kingpins are finding a safe haven in Sierra

Leone, allegedly shielded by those close to power.. Whether through neglect or collusion, these actions corrode public trust and embolden criminal networks.. Corruption still festers, even as we make progress.. Where corruption thrives, cartels flourish.. Where institutions falter, criminal groups grow bold.. If we do not change course, we risk a future in which decisions serve not the people but those who profit from our nation’s undoing.. A Crisis of Response: Are we genuinely fighting

drug trafficking?. Announcements have been made, task forces formed, and arrests carried out, yet our response still falls short of the threat we face.. Convictions are few compared to the scale of the crisis.. Rehabilitation is woefully underfunded, reaching only a handful of those in need.. Meanwhile, drugs slip through our porous borders with shocking ease.. Why do our port and border officials remain in their posts amid such failures?. Why do investigations never reach

the masterminds behind these operations?. Why is it always the small-time seller who faces justice, while the trail of evidence and confessions is left cold?. People like us, alarmed by what lies ahead, see the truth unfolding.. Most citizens demand tougher penalties and tighter border controls.. Our call for urgent action rings loud and clear.. The Cost to Our Global Reputation.. I was in London in November, 2025 and attended a seminar hosted by my

Alma mater, the University of Westminster, on the UN Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (1988).. It was a great interactive session, with a participatory audience of around 250 people.. The discussion took a center stage on West Africa as a hot spot for drug trafficking.. Immediately, my former International Criminal Law Lecturer, Dr Marco Longobardo, spotted me, and his words were “ Osman, I understand your country, Sierra Leone, has

been making some quiet progress in drug trafficking along the West African axis.. Please share with us your thoughts”.. The audience burst into laughter.. After a very long time, it was a moment I got nervous being handed a microphone.. Not because I was scared of public speaking, not because I could not properly express myself, but because I was shocked by how quickly we have been followed and now a case study in contemporary

discussions in such fora.. I was nervous because I wasn’t sure how honestly I could answer such a question that would embarrass the integrity of my country.. I implemented a strategy I learned from a communication Skills Expert; I flipped the script by responding, “That’s a thought-provoking question, but I will be more than happy to hear your initial thoughts on Sierra Leone so I could add in a way of confirming and make clarification

where needed”.. Na so ar take buy time en jomp disgrace o.. It is crucial to note that no nation exists in isolation.. As Sierra Leone’s ties to drug trafficking and cartel activity deepen, the consequences ripple far beyond our borders.. International trust falters.. Investors grow wary.. Diplomatic ties are tested.. The world is watching, casting an uneasy spotlight on our country.. Once celebrated for its resilience after conflict, our united fight against the deadly

Ebola virus, Sierra Leone now risks being defined not by its strength, but by its vulnerability to organised crime.. A Clarion Call: Act Now or Lose Control!. This is the moment for bold leadership.. The government must move beyond words and deliver decisive action.. Our border and port officials owe the nation answers.. Our security forces must explain why investigations into drug trafficking never reach the masterminds.. Anything less is a slow surrender of our

state to those who respect neither law nor nation.. The future remains ours to claim.. Sierra Leone’s hope endures, but the warnings are unmistakable.. This fight is not just about health or law enforcement; it is about our very sovereignty.. We cannot allow our nation to be ruled from the shadows or let criminal networks script our destiny.. History will judge us by what we do now.. Let the records show that when the shadow

of cartel capture loomed, Sierra Leone stood firm, took action, and reclaimed its destiny.
