Sen. Mitch McConnell earned nearly $45,000 in taxpayer-funded salary during an extended absence from Capitol Hill as the Kentucky Republican recovered from injuries suffered in a fall.

The 84-year-old senator has been away from the Senate for roughly three months after being hospitalized following the June accident. Although he did not appear at the Capitol during that period, McConnell has continued to receive his $174,000 annual Senate salary.

At that rate, McConnell earns approximately $476.71 per day. Over a 94-day absence, his pay totals roughly $44,811 — just shy of $45,000. Members of Congress receive fixed annual salaries that are not tied to attendance, including when lawmakers are absent because of illness.

McConnell could return as senators reconvene in Washington following a five-week recess, although his office has not publicly confirmed when he will be back.

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer told CNN that McConnell staffers had said it was their “goal” for the senator to return when the Senate reconvened.

“I expect that. I sure hope so,” Comer said.

If McConnell remains away from the Senate, his salary will continue accumulating at roughly $476 for each additional day of his absence.

The prolonged absence has fueled questions in Kentucky and among some constituents about McConnell’s health and when he plans to resume his public duties. He has not been seen publicly since before his June fall, with information about his condition coming primarily through statements from his office.

Congress’ return from summer break

The uncertainty surrounding his return comes as senators resume business following their summer break, putting renewed attention on whether McConnell will be physically present as lawmakers tackle their legislative agenda in Washington.

McConnell also oversees a congressional budget supporting dozens of staff members. His staff received just under $4 million between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026, the most recent 12-month period for which figures are available.

His Senate salary represents only one part of his broader finances. Financial disclosure filings and previous estimates indicate McConnell has accumulated a multimillion-dollar net worth during his decades in office, with wealth attributed to investments, retirement assets and family finances, including those of his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.
