Scotty Miller Bears tryout: WR targets rookie minicamp spot
Veteran WR Scotty Miller joins the Bears’ rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, hoping to earn a 90-man offseason roster spot after going unsigned in free agency.
A veteran receiver is turning a tryout into a statement opportunity at rookie minicamp, with Scotty Miller pitching himself to the Chicago Bears as he looks for another roster home.
Miller, who spent the 2024 and 2025 seasons in Pittsburgh, has not drawn a deal in free agency, and the next chance came at the Bears’ rookie minicamp. He is participating on a tryout basis as he competes for a spot on the team’s 90-man offseason roster.
Meanwhile, on the field, Miller made an immediate impression during Friday’s practice. As the team’s official coverage described it, he secured a “dazzling diving catch” deep down the right sideline on the final snap of the session.
That highlight also added weight to what the Bears are hoping to evaluate from Miller.. Bears head coach Ben Johnson pointed to a connection that stretches back earlier in Miller’s career. explaining that receivers coach Antwaan Randle El previously worked with him in Tampa.. Johnson added that from afar he has been able to gauge Miller’s speed and quickness. describing him as “certainly very intriguing” as he competes to earn a look.
Miller enters this audition with a resume built on experience at the highest level. A sixth-round pick of the Buccaneers in 2019, he won a Super Bowl with Tampa in 2020. After four seasons in the Bay, he spent one year with Atlanta before moving on to Pittsburgh.
The 2020 season stands as a peak stretch for Miller’s production, when he recorded 33 catches for 501 yards and three touchdowns.. It remains part of the reason his current opportunity matters: the Bears can assess whether that blend of playmaking and familiarity with receiver coaching can translate in the middle of a roster competition.
For now, Miller’s path runs straight through performance at camp, where every rep offers a chance to turn a tryout into a contract and a place on the offseason roster. Misryoum
At the same time, the Bears’ willingness to bring in a veteran for rookie minicamp reflects the broader purpose of offseason evaluation: blending new prospects with seasoned contributors who can showcase how quickly they can adapt, compete, and execute within a team’s current coaching framework.
