Schwarber’s 5-Game Homer Streak Lifts Phillies

Kyle Schwarber homered for the fifth straight game as the Phillies edged the Red Sox 2-1 in Boston, handing Don Mattingly his 900th win.

Kyle Schwarber kept swinging and Boston couldn’t find an answer, as the Phillies beat the Red Sox 2-1 on Tuesday night to stretch the superstar’s home run run to five straight games.

The key moment came early: Schwarber hit his major league-leading 17th home run in the first inning. a solo shot off Red Sox opener Jovani Morán.. The homer tied a Phillies record for consecutive games with a home run and set the tone for a game that Philadelphia ultimately managed to keep within reach.

Philadelphia’s lead did not rely solely on the long ball. In the second inning, Bryson Stott delivered an RBI double, extending the advantage to 2-0 and giving the Phillies room to work the rest of the way.

On the mound, Zach Wheeler turned in another steady outing for Philadelphia. He allowed one run and scattered six hits across 7 1/3 innings, striking out four while limiting Boston’s ability to turn early pressure into sustained scoring.

Schwarber’s burst of power has become one of the defining storylines of the Phillies’ recent surge. He has six homers in his last five games, and the team has homered in five straight contests, joining a notable group of Phillies players tied to franchise home-run streaks.

The game tightened in the seventh when Boston threatened to make it a one-run contest.. With Mickey Gasper on base and one out. Brayan Abreu lifted a high fly ball to right that came up short—about six feet from the right-field fence—before Adolis García made the catch.. Later in the inning, Ceddanne Rafaela followed with an RBI single to bring the Red Sox to within one.

Philadelphia’s front-office and managerial storyline also hovered over the night.. The win marked Don Mattingly’s 900th managerial victory. and it landed as Philadelphia continued to build momentum since his promotion on April 28.. After Rob Thomson was fired. the organization tried to bring in former Red Sox manager Alex Cora. but Cora declined. choosing to spend the summer with his family; Mattingly was then elevated from bench coach.

Philadelphia has benefited from that transition. The Phillies improved to 11-3 since Mattingly took over and are 20-22 overall, winning three straight and six of eight entering Tuesday’s game.

In the ninth, Jhoan Duran worked through a stressful sequence, allowing a hit and a walk, but he held the line to record his sixth save and preserve the 2-1 result.

For Boston, the defeat added to recent struggles, with the Red Sox losing three of their last four games. Morán started for Boston and took the loss after surrendering Schwarber’s homer during his brief stint.

After Morán exited, Brayan Bello provided length and steadiness, going 6 1/3 innings and giving up one run with four hits. Even with those efforts, Boston could not overcome the early deficit.

The matchup also carried the weight of first-time timing between the teams under the Phillies’ current direction. It was the first game Philadelphia has played against Boston since Dave Dombrowski fired Rob Thomson and moved quickly toward the managerial reshuffling that followed.

Looking ahead, the clubs are set for a follow-up on Wednesday. Philadelphia rookie right-hander Andrew Painter, listed with a 1-4 record and a 6.89 ERA, is scheduled to pitch against Red Sox right-hander Sonny Gray, who comes in at 3-1 with a 3.54 ERA.
