Schwarber’s 18th HR sparks Phillies win

Kyle Schwarber hit a two-run 18th homer as the Phillies beat Boston, while Brewers, Reds, and Mets also logged key wins.

Kyle Schwarber delivered when it mattered again, powering Philadelphia past Boston with his major league-leading 18th home run.

Schwarber’s two-run shot broke a scoreless tie in the eighth inning and landed with authority. clearing the visiting bullpen in right field before traveling an estimated 417 feet.. It continued a remarkable run for the slugger. who has seven homers in his last seven games. making him the first Phillies player to match that pace over a similar span since Trea Turner did it in 2023.

Bryson Stott added to the lead later in the eighth after an infield hit initially brought an out call that was overturned following a Phillies challenge.. Brad Keller earned the win after striking out two batters in one relief inning. and Jhoan Duran struck out the side in the ninth for his seventh save.

For Boston, Wilyer Abreu’s RBI single in the eighth accounted for the lone run. The Red Sox closed their homestand after a tough stretch in which they lost two of three against Tampa Bay and Philadelphia.

Over in Milwaukee, Luis Rengifo drove in three runs and Kyle Harrison struck out seven over five scoreless innings as the Brewers routed the San Diego Padres 7-1. The win capped a 5-1 homestand for Milwaukee, which had swept the New York Yankees before going 2-3 against San Diego.

Harrison improved to 4-1 while lowering his ERA to 2.09, allowing five hits and no walks.. Milwaukee struck early. scoring three runs in each of the first two innings against Griffin Canning. who was unable to get out of the second.. After Canning began with a strikeout of Jackson Chourio. he walked four straight batters. and Andrew Vaughn drove in the first run by taking a 3-2 pitch.

Rengifo followed with a two-run single to right, and the Brewers kept piling on in the second inning. Brice Turang and Gary Sánchez delivered RBI doubles, then Vaughn singled home Sánchez to extend the damage. Canning has now allowed 12 runs over six innings in his last two starts.

Milwaukee widened the margin to 7-0 in the fourth when Vaughn doubled and later scored on another Rengifo contribution. Rengifo has been in a strong groove as well, going 7-for-12 over his last three games.

Cincinnati avoided a sweep as Chase Burns threw six scoreless innings and JJ Bleday went deep twice, driving in six runs in a win over Washington. Burns (5-1) allowed just two hits, struck out seven, and walked two to earn his fourth consecutive decision.

The right-hander managed trouble in the middle innings, working around a three-error fifth inning that included one miscue by Burns after he dropped a toss while covering first base. Still, he kept the Nationals from crossing the plate and has allowed only one earned run in his last three starts.

Matt McLain provided early momentum. hitting a home run in the second to put Cincinnati ahead 2-0 with the Reds’ first of four blasts on the day.. Bleday then added a three-run homer in the fifth to make it 9-0. ending the day for Washington starter Foster Griffin. who had kept things relatively tight until surrendering nine runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Pittsburgh also made an impact in the middle of its season story. with Endy Rodriguez returning to the majors and producing two hits with two RBIs in a victory over Colorado.. Rodriguez. a catcher once regarded as one of the top prospects in the Pirates’ system. missed all of 2024 and most of 2025 due to elbow injuries before getting back into action.

In his first big league appearance since June 6. 2025. Rodriguez doubled off Chase Dollander in the second and added a two-run single in the third.. Ryan O’Hearn contributed three hits for the Pirates. including a two-run homer in the first as Pittsburgh raced to an early lead.. Rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin and Jared Triolo each added two hits as the Pirates began a six-game homestand by taking two of three from the Rockies.

On the mound. Carmen Mlodzinski gave Pittsburgh a steady lift after coming on following left-handed relievers Mason Montgomery and Evan Sisk.. Don Kelly used Montgomery and Sisk early to counter a lefty-heavy portion of Colorado’s lineup. and by the time Mlodzinski entered in the third. Pittsburgh already had built a comfortable 6-0 advantage.. The Pirates’ lead was not without a scare. though. as Dollander struggled early and was removed two batters into the second with right arm tightness described by the team.

For Colorado, Troy Johnston hit a two-run double, but the Rockies dropped for the sixth time in their last seven games at PNC Park after Pittsburgh took quick control.

New York’s sweep story in Detroit added another highlight when A.J. Ewing hit his first big league home run to spark a comeback for the Mets. The homer came after Ewing had been promoted ahead of the series opener Tuesday, and it helped New York complete a three-game sweep.

Ewing’s 405-foot shot off Keider Montero started the third with New York already chasing momentum. He finished the game 3-for-9 with three RBIs and four walks against the Tigers, as the Mets recorded their first sweep since taking three straight from the Philadelphia Phillies in August.

The Mets added steadily: Brett Baty struck with a two-run homer in the fourth. and Juan Soto delivered a tie-breaking RBI single in the fifth.. Mark Vientos then went deep for a two-run shot, while Hayden Senger contributed a safety squeeze in the sixth.. Soto and Marcus Semien added home runs later as well, giving New York multiple paths to keep its lead expanding.

Nolan McLean took the win despite giving up Gage Workman’s three-run homer in the first. He worked through seven innings, ending a winless streak that had lasted six starts, allowing six hits, walking three, and striking out seven. Dillon Dingler homered for Detroit in the eighth.

Minnesota’s season momentum also showed as Zebby Matthews threw seven scoreless innings in his season debut to help the Twins beat Miami and win consecutive series for the first time in a month.. Matthews. the final cut from the rotation competition at the end of spring training. was promoted from Triple-A to help manage workloads by pushing other starters back.

Matthews delivered with command, allowing four hits and one walk over 83 pitches while striking out five.. Austin Martin and Josh Bell then powered Minnesota’s offense with two-run doubles during a five-run second inning against Marlins starter Braxton Garrett.. The Twins’ burst also spoiled Garrett’s first major league appearance in nearly two years.

Martin and James Outman each finished with two hits. a walk. and three RBIs for Minnesota. which has won four of its last five games after going 5-16 from April 15 through May 8.. They also took two of three at Cleveland last weekend and then swept two of three from Miami to begin a nine-game homestand.

Garrett managed to record only four outs before the Twins’ momentum fully tilted the game.. After being called up from Triple-A to replace injured rookie Robby Snelling. Garrett allowed five runs on four hits and five walks. and although he struck out three straight after loading the bases at the start of the game. he couldn’t prevent the second-inning damage.

In Houston. Luke Raley hit a three-run home run and Mitch Garver added his first homer of the season as Seattle beat the Astros.. Raley scored the opening runs in the first inning with his 10th homer of the year and his third on the road trip. while Garver. starting at catcher in place of injured Cal Raleigh. extended the Mariners’ advantage in the fourth.

Seattle built the lead further when Garver’s homer scored J.P. Crawford, making it 5-1. Cole Young later contributed a one-run double in the sixth, and Crawford doubled in the eighth to plate Brice Matthews, completing Seattle’s scoring.

Luis Castillo earned his first win of the year, working 5 2/3 innings and giving up three runs on four hits.. Castillo struck out six and walked four, and Domingo Gonzalez pitched the final two frames, surrendering one hit.. Yordan Alvarez homered for Houston for his 14th of the season, but the Astros couldn’t close the gap.. Mike Burrows took the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

The Cardinals’ game also featured a late swing as Jordan Walker’s ninth-inning double and go-ahead RBI helped St. Louis defeat Oakland. Trailing 4-3, Iván Herrera tied the game with a single to left that scored Thomas Saggese, before Walker’s double moved the Cardinals ahead.

Earlier, Nick Kurtz opened the scoring for the Athletics with a solo home run in the first. Victor Scott II tied the game in the fifth with a homer, and Walker added his 12th home run of the year in the sixth to put St. Louis ahead 2-1. Nolan Gorman followed with a single to right for a 3-1 lead.

St.. Louis maintained control after that.. Matt Svanson pitched a scoreless eighth. allowing one hit while striking out two. and Michael McGreevy worked six innings. giving up one run on five hits with three strikeouts.. Oakland narrowed the gap with a two-run single from Shea Langeliers in the seventh and a homer from Zack Gelof for the second straight day. but the Athletics could not take the lead.

Jack Perkins suffered his second blown save of the season after pitching 2/3 of an inning.

Chicago ended its slide in style as Ian Happ’s long home run helped the Cubs beat Atlanta 5-0. with five Chicago pitchers combining for a shutout that snapped a four-game losing streak.. Ben Brown made his second consecutive start after beginning the season with 12 bullpen appearances and delivered a strong outing by allowing one hit across four innings. striking out seven in 65 pitches.

The Cubs’ bullpen then locked things down. with Hoby Milner earning the win for two scoreless innings. Phil Maton and Jacob Webb adding scoreless frames. and Daniel Palencia striking out two in the ninth for his third save.. Atlanta. which leads the majors in runs scored. was shut out for the second time this season and managed only five hits.

Chris Sale also played a big role, allowing just one unearned run in six innings.. Sale worked around five hits and two walks while striking out eight, leaving six Braves on base.. Happ’s home run. which began the eighth inning. traveled 424 feet to right field and bounced off the side of the Chop House restaurant after coming off Reynaldo López. extending Chicago’s lead to 2-0.

Michael Busch had a single that stretched his on-base streak to 15 games.

The White Sox found their own momentum in Kansas City as Randal Grichuk delivered a two-run homer and drove in four runs to help Chicago win its fifth straight game.. The White Sox improved to 22-21. moved above .500 for the first time in 2024-25 late-season terms. and brought themselves within one game of idle Cleveland for first place in the AL Central.

Anthony Kay pitched six-plus innings, allowing two runs on six hits, to earn Chicago’s win. The White Sox also swept their third series this season and extended Kansas City’s losing streak to four games.

Kay was relieved after Kyle Isbel’s triple led off the seventh. and the bullpen followed with Tyler Davis. then Sean Newcomb. who recorded a scoreless eighth and ninth for his first save.. Lane Thomas and Maikel Garcia drove in Kansas City’s runs, and Salvador Perez recorded two hits.. Kris Bubic took the loss for Kansas City after allowing five runs, five hits, and three walks in four innings.

Finally. Los Angeles completed its series finale with a late push against San Francisco. sparked by Will Smith’s first career leadoff home run and a tiebreaking hit from pinch-hitter Alex Call.. Smith. batting in the leadoff spot typically occupied by Shohei Ohtani. went deep to right-center in the bottom of the first off Landen Roupp for an early spark.

Ohtani again sat out as designated hitter amid an offensive slump. and Los Angeles still found ways to turn the lineup over.. Call delivered a crucial two-run single in the sixth with two outs. scoring Max Muncy and Teoscar Hernández before Miguel Rojas added an RBI single that extended the Dodgers’ lead to 5-2.

San Francisco made its response through the middle innings. Jung Hoo Lee hit an inside-the-park, two-run homer off Emmet Sheehan with two outs in the fifth to tie the score at 2. Hyeseong Kim added an RBI single in the second that made it 2-0.

Sheehan settled in and allowed two runs and two hits while striking out six over six innings.. Tanner Scott finished the job by retiring the side in the ninth to earn his fourth save. moving the Dodgers back into sole possession of first in the NL West after the Padres lost earlier Thursday.. Los Angeles also avoided losing its home series to the Giants for the first time since June 16-18. 2023. and it salvaged a split in the four-game set.
