Safari 27’s next evolution is aimed at one of the browser’s most persistent annoyances: the endless sprawl of tabs.. In a test version of Safari for iOS 27. iPadOS 27. and macOS 27. users are expected to be able to let AI automatically organize tab groups—right from the tab-group switcher—using a new option called “Organize Tabs.”
The change builds on Apple’s original Tab Groups feature, introduced in Safari 15 in 2021. Back then, the goal was straightforward: help users corral frequently used tabs into saved groups so they could switch between them more easily and keep browsing sessions from turning into clutter.
Five years later, the update suggests Apple wants to reduce the manual work that comes with keeping those groups tidy.. In the updated test Safari build. the center-top button used for moving between tab groups now includes a test option labeled “Organize Tabs.” When enabled. Safari presents the behavior as an automatic organization mode rather than a fully hands-off replacement for user control.
According to the test description. Safari will group tabs into “topics you browse.” That wording matters because it indicates the logic is likely based on the user’s browsing signals—effectively clustering tabs around subject matter instead of requiring users to create and manage each group manually.
Apple has not. at least in the way the feature is presented in the test interface. framed this as an explicitly Apple Intelligence-powered capability.. Still. the mechanism is described as using AI in practice. and the workflow strongly implies a system that can infer themes from what you’re viewing and then apply that structure to your open tabs.
The underlying idea is reminiscent of other Apple features that reorganize information from what you enter or view.. One example is the way Reminders can categorize items drawn from a list. such as sorting product types in a shopping list.. While tab grouping is a different problem. the shared theme is automation that turns messy or flat information into more readable categories.
For Safari users. the practical benefit is obvious: fewer moments spent deciding where each tab belongs. and less time hunting for the “right” group when you return to an earlier thread.. It also suggests a shift in how tab groups are expected to be used. moving from a primarily manual organizational tool toward an assistant-like feature that reacts to browsing behavior.
There’s also a workflow implication in how the feature is framed as optional.. The test mode can be set either to let Safari automatically group tabs together or to leave tabs for manual organization by the user.. That dual approach may be important for power users who prefer tight control, while still offering convenience for everyone else.
As the debut approaches—reported to be “likely” at WWDC—the broader question is how far Apple intends to push intelligence inside everyday interfaces.. Tab Groups were designed to solve organization at the user level; “Organize Tabs” points toward organization at the system level. where the browser does more of the classification work.. If it lands in the final release. Safari’s tab management could feel less like a chore and more like a dynamic workspace that reshapes itself as your interests change.
