Ryan Lochte clapped back after critics claimed he looked “unrecognizable,” with his girlfriend Molly Gillihan posting the exchange on Instagram and Lochte responding that people were judging old photos from his peak years.
Ryan Lochte wasn’t ready to take the latest round of appearance-shaming lying down—especially when the accusations were coming fast and, in his words, from “clowns.”
In a video posted by his girlfriend. Molly Gillihan. via Instagram on Thursday. May 14. Gillihan told Lochte. 41. that her phone was “blowing up” with people saying nobody could recognize him.. “Baby. they say that you don’t look the same at all. ” she said in the clip. before adding that some people even accused the Olympic champion of catfishing them.
Lochte asked Gillihan which photos fans were using to compare him. and she pointed to images taken during the height of his pro swimming career.. “Oh. so they’re taking a picture of when I was working out every day. getting makeup put on me for photo shoots. back in. like. 2012 in the Olympics.. We’re in 2026,” he replied.
Then he leaned into the sarcasm. “What’s that, 14 years? You think I aged?”
He also acknowledged that his hair color is different because he dyes it, before pushing back harder on the premise of being “unrecognizable.” “I mean, to be unrecognizable … I don’t get it,” Lochte vented, finishing with, “They’re all clowns, come on.”
Gillihan backed him throughout the exchange, telling him she loves him and thinks he still looks “handsome,” even as the internet tried to turn his new look into a controversy.
The Instagram post’s caption added a playful jab at the chaos, with Gillihan writing, “👀 Who is this guy pretending to be my boyfriend @ryanlochte?!? 🤣🤣🤣 #unrecognizable.”
Earlier in the week. Lochte had shared a video on Instagram to announce a new chapter for his career—his move into coaching at Missouri State University.. In the post caption, he said, “Coach Ryan Lochte is heading to Missouri State University!!. I am so excited to announce that I will be coaching with coach @dav_collins @missouristate!” He added. “I am so excited and beyond grateful for this opportunity!!. I can’t wait to take @mostateswim to the next level!. Let’s goooo bears!!!🐻.”
That announcement drew immediate comments from followers, some of which focused on his looks. “Literally does not look like him,” one person wrote, while another added that it took them a long time to realize it was Lochte after the video rolled in.
Even stranger guesses showed up in the thread—one commenter joked, “Thought it was Kash Patel at first,” a detail Gillihan referenced when she later posted an Instagram Story. When she re-shared Lochte’s video of him calling the critics “clowns,” she captioned it, “Pipe down Kash Patel!”
Gillihan and Lochte have been sharing the spotlight more closely since they moved in together in January, seven months after Lochte’s ex Kayla Rae Reid filed for divorce.

Everybody looks different after years, especially with makeup and dye. I saw some people say he’s doing plastic surgery which like… maybe? But now he’s calling everyone clowns so I guess that’s his whole brand now? Honestly the internet just loves drama.
