Rory McIlroy earns six-figure prize in comeback at Truist Championship

Rory McIlroy secured a top-20 finish at the Truist Championship after a final-round rally, as Kristoffer Reitan claimed his maiden PGA Tour title at Quail Hollow.
Rory McIlroy rounded off the Truist Championship with a late surge, posting a closing round of 67, four under-par at Quail Hollow.. That result left him a considerable 10 shots adrift of Norwegian winner Kristoffer Reitan, who shot a 69 to secure his first PGA Tour victory by two strokes from Denmark’s Nicolai Hojgaard and American Rickie Fowler.. McIlroy, making his first competitive appearance since claiming a second Masters title last month, saw his chances
evaporate following a calamitous third round on Saturday.. He had entered that round just four shots off the overnight leaders and opened with a birdie as he chased a fifth triumph at the event.. Yet a damaging sequence of four successive bogeys, and six dropped shots in total during his third round, effectively ended his challenge, reports Belfast Live .. The Northern Irishman bounced back strongly on Sunday, recording six birdies against just two bogeys,
giving him plenty of encouragement heading into this week’s second major — the US PGA Championship at Aronimink, Philadelphia.. Alex Fitzpatrick had begun Sunday holding a one-shot advantage over Reitan, but swiftly surrendered his lead after going three over-par through his opening two holes.. The Sheffield-born golfer, elder brother of Ryder Cup star Matt , battled his way back into contention before a double bogey at the penultimate hole sent him tumbling down the leaderboard,
eventually finishing fourth.. Fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood ended the week in a share of fifth place on 11 under after carding a 69.. Reitan also pocketed the top prize of $3.6 million, while McIlroy walked away with $242,100 for his efforts following his T19 finish..
