ROG Xreal R1 AR gaming glasses pre-order for $849

ROG Xreal R1 AR gaming glasses go up for pre-order at Best Buy, with sales starting May 17 on ASUS’s site.
A new wave of AR gaming hardware is moving from show-floor hype to real-world shopping: ASUS’s ROG Xreal R1 glasses are now open for pre-order, priced at $849.
The ROG Xreal R1 were first teased around CES. and the latest update makes it clear that the company is ready to bring the concept to customers soon.. ASUS’s gaming division announced the glasses are available to pre-order at Best Buy. with additional availability through the company’s own website beginning May 17.
What makes the ROG version stand out is positioning rather than reinvention.. The report stated that the ROG Xreal R1 is essentially a “supercharged” upgrade over Xreal’s One Pro glasses. and the change shows up in its smoother 240Hz refresh rate.. That higher refresh target is typically aimed at reducing perceived motion blur and improving responsiveness—an important difference for fast-moving gameplay.
Even with the performance boost, the core viewing setup remains closely aligned with Xreal’s earlier flagship hardware.. The glasses keep a 57-degree field of view. designed to create a large virtual display—up to a 171-inch screen—when viewed from about four meters away.. They also continue to use 1080p resolution, a spec the report noted as still comparatively modest for the money.
For buyers considering the jump from Xreal’s $649 One Pro model. the pricing decision is likely tied to the practical realities of display hardware.. The report pointed out that while it would be reasonable to expect higher-than-HD resolution at this cost. it can be difficult to find smaller micro-OLED panels in higher resolutions like 1. 440p or 4K. especially at scale.
Beyond gaming, Xreal’s pitch for its glasses remains flexible.. With the improved refresh rate. the ROG Xreal R1 are described as well-suited to fast-paced shooters. while still usable during downtime for watching movies or doing general PC work.. In other words, the glasses are presented as a tool for both entertainment and everyday computing.
ASUS’s choice to package the ROG model with an included dock is also a major part of the story.. Sources indicate the dock is meant to make setup easier when switching between multiple devices, including consoles and PCs.. The report highlighted that the dock helps support connectivity beyond what earlier Xreal devices made straightforward.
The dock also broadens compatibility in practical, sometimes finicky scenarios.. While the glasses themselves can connect directly to PCs and other hardware via USB-C. the report stated the dock makes it easier for devices like the Switch 2 to work seamlessly—an emphasis that suggests the ROG Xreal R1 are intended to be more “plug-and-play” for a wider range of users.
There is a trade-off: the dock appears to be bulky, and the report suggested buyers should expect to sacrifice a significant amount of portability if they want to rely on it regularly. That matters for people who bought Xreal hardware specifically for travel, where every accessory counts.
While the reporter said they have not tested the ROG Xreal R1 personally. they were impressed by Xreal’s One Pro and kept an eye on future hardware.. They described the earlier glasses as especially useful while traveling. noting they were effective for extending or “blowing up” a laptop screen. watching movies. and playing games on planes and in hotel rooms.. They also emphasized that the glasses were lighter than bulky VR headsets and could still deliver a sharp experience even with additional prescription lens inserts.
With pre-orders already live and a May 17 on-sale date for the ASUS website. the ROG Xreal R1 are shaping up to target a specific buyer: someone who wants AR gaming responsiveness. a large virtual display experience. and more dock-based connectivity—while accepting that portability may take a hit when you bring the dock along.. For now. the big question for early shoppers is whether the added refresh smoothness and connectivity polish justify the $849 entry point compared with Xreal’s $649 One Pro.

$849 for glasses?? That’s like… basically a phone bill. I’m good.
So it’s $849 but it’s only 1080p? I don’t get why everyone’s hyping it then. Also 240Hz sounds fake if the resolution is still low.
Best Buy pre-order already, that’s wild. My buddy said these are basically just VR but “AR” so it’s the same thing, right? Either way 57 degree field of view doesn’t sound huge… like my gaming monitor is wider.
171-inch display lol sure until you actually try it. 4 meters away and 240Hz… I feel like the blur thing is marketing. And “supercharged” upgrade over the One Pro? I swear these companies just slap a new name and charge $200 more.
