RFMF Land Force Commander vows action against drug dealers

Brigadier General Onisivoro Covunisaqa warned drug networks will be targeted as RFMF Land Forces prepare for Exercise Bougainville 2026.

A blunt warning from the RFMF Land Force Commander has landed directly on drug dealers and those who profit from drug use.

Speaking during the 2nd Quarter Parade, Brigadier General Onisivoro Covunisaqa told anyone selling drugs, using them, enabling the trade, or doing business in narcotics that “their time will come.” He framed the message as an intent to hold people accountable through the nation’s justice system.

In the same address, he tied the enforcement push to a wider commitment to discipline and unity within the uniform, warning there is no room for divided loyalties or collusion with criminals.

This kind of public messaging matters because it sets the tone for internal discipline and external cooperation, shaping how soldiers and communities understand what comes next.

Brigadier General Covunisaqa also directed his remarks toward past challenges the force has faced, reminding personnel that the Land Forces have confronted dark chapters before.. He said leadership will not treat the fight as a temporary effort, describing it instead as a sustained constitutional and moral commitment aimed at dismantling narcotics networks.

He further described the goal in everyday terms: securing homes, schools and streets, and helping ensure a future without fear for children and households across Fiji.

The Commander said the RFMF stands at a decisive crossroad in the fight against narcotics and organised crime, presenting the nation with a choice between staying passive as criminal networks harm communities, or rising to defend the survival, dignity and future of Fiji.

In this context, the emphasis on “choice” is as much about public resolve as it is about military readiness.

Brigadier General Covunisaqa reaffirmed support for the Commander’s directive to take action, while stressing that soldiers must remain steadfast in upholding Fiji’s Constitution and laws. He also said Land Forces leadership will stand with every soldier unconditionally, without hesitation.

He acknowledged trials ahead but pledged collective protection for soldiers and their families. He pointed to training, especially Exercise Bougainville 2026 in August, as the “crucible” that will sharpen operational capability and keep the force prepared.

Ultimately, the message signals that enforcement, unity, and preparation are being aligned under one narrative: that the fight against narcotics is meant to be long-term and grounded in lawful service.
