Deputy Ward asks for time to review revised IS 465
Donegal Deputy Charles Ward has appealed for time to digest and review the publication of the revised IS 465 standard for defective blocks. The document is the Irish Standard protocol used to assess, test, and categorise homes built with defective concrete blocks. The 100 Redress TD issued a statement a short time ago on the new revision of the IS 465 standard issued by the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) Deputy Ward said that while the arrival of the revision is an important development,
it is essential that sufficient time is allowed for a thorough and detailed review of the document. He said that his team will now begin a comprehensive technical assessment of the standard, examining its provisions, implications, and practical application in full. And he added “Given the complexity and significance of I.S. 465, particularly for homeowners, industry professionals, and policymakers, it is critical that any commentary is informed, measured, and evidence based. “At this early stage, it would be premature to draw conclusions. The priority is
to carefully scrutinise the detail, consult with relevant experts where necessary, and fully understand how the revised standard addresses key issues, including material performance, testing protocols, and long-term structural considerations.” Deputy Ward said that once this is done, he will issue a “considered position” on the revision. He stated “A comprehensive understanding serves as the basis for informed decision-making. Therefore, it would be unfair to the situation to form an opinion based on a superficial reading of the document. “I will provide an update to
the homeowners as soon as possible.” In the meantime, he urged all stakeholders to approach the document with the same level of diligence and to allow the necessary time for proper evaluation.
