Red Wings’ Moritz Seider finds silver lining from Dylan Larkin’s trade request, Steve Yzerman’s exit

It was been a tulmutious offseason for the Detorit Red Wings, and now, Moritz Seider is talking about all the changes.

The offseason has been hectic for the Detroit Red Wings after missing the playoffs for a tenth straight season. Star player Dylan Larkin has requested to be traded, while the Red Wings also removed Steve Yzerman from the general manager role. The team still does not have a permanent general manager, but the Red Wings did just make Shawn Horcoff the interim general manager.

As players return to Detroit for the opening of training camp, Moritz Seider is talking about the offseason, per Max Bultman of The Athletic.

“Obviously there’s a lot of change around us right now, and maybe we can use the change for good,” Seider said. “Change is good sometimes. It doesn’t matter what change; it’s about what you do with the opportunity. And I feel like there is plenty of opportunity there for us.”

Currently, Larkin is expected to report to camp, as is Simon Edvinsson, who does not have a contract but will head to camp as an unsigned restricted free agent. Meanwhile, training camp will also look different this year. Normally, camp is held in Traverse City, Michigan, a small town in West Michigan. This year, it will be held in Detroit. Regardless, Seider comes into the season motivated.

There’s so much more to give, there’s so much more to accomplish. But it also has that weird, like, aftertaste in your mouth that you’ve never gotten close, or like even being in the playoffs,” Seider said. “That’s something you obviously want to put in the past, but it’s kind of hard because you kind of get reminded (of) it every single day, because you weren’t there when all the other teams were fighting for the Stanley Cup.”

The Red Wings begin their quest to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs when they host their regular season opener on October 2 against the New York Rangers.
