Neighbors and project partners gathered Friday along East 118th Street to celebrate the completion of 10 homes built under the initiative Reclaiming Chicago.. The Hope Center Foundation and Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives marked the next step in phase two for Roseland. with additional properties already moving through contract and lender referral processes.

The effort highlights a growing national focus on neighborhood-scale housing strategies. where development is paired with supports intended to make homeownership more attainable for working families.. In this context. Reclaiming Chicago’s model is less about a single project and more about building pipelines that can reach buyers over time.

With phase two in Roseland now complete, the campaign’s Roseland footprint brings its total homes built under the program to 90. The larger goal, as described by organizers, is to construct 2,000 homes across the South and West sides, aiming to counter decades of property vacancy and capital flight.

Reclaiming Chicago is led by the civic coalition United Power for Action and Justice. which organizers say has raised $52 million to support homebuilding and subsidies for buyers.. According to the Hope Center. assistance for Roseland home purchases includes down payment support of about $50. 000. alongside referrals intended to connect buyers with lending resources.

That combination matters because housing access is rarely just a matter of finding a unit. When programs coordinate services, financing pathways, and development work in the same neighborhood, they can help reduce bottlenecks that often keep prospective buyers stuck.

Many of the newly completed three-bedroom homes are located along the same block where earlier construction from phase one finished in late 2024.. Organizers pointed to a wider ripple effect. saying reinvestment is beginning to show up beyond the new builds as nearby owners refurbish properties and previously vacant buildings are improved.

The lots used for phase two were provided through the Cook County Land Bank Authority, and the land bank’s role is central to the campaign’s approach to infill development. Organizers say they have acquired dozens of lots that can be used for future projects tied to the initiative.

Looking ahead. the Hope Center plans additional construction in Roseland. with work expected to begin next fall for 20 homes. followed by another 50.. Reclaiming Chicago also currently has about 200 homes in various stages of development. with targeting that includes Back of the Yards. Chicago Lawn. and North Lawndale.
