PlayStation Store Class Action: Sony May Settle for $7.8M

Misryoum reports a judge granted preliminary approval for a PlayStation Store class action settlement tied to alleged anticompetitive practices.

A potential shake-up in PlayStation Store billing is coming for some users, with a class action settlement moving closer to approval.

Misryoum reports that a federal judge in San Francisco has granted preliminary approval to a proposed settlement of $7.85 million. resolving claims that Sony engaged in anticompetitive conduct affecting how digital games are sold on the PlayStation Store.. The terms are aimed at players who purchased eligible digital games during the period from April 2019 through December 2023.

At the heart of the case is the allegation that Sony restricted competition by removing “game-specific vouchers” sold by third parties in April 2019.. The lawsuit argues that those vouchers could have created pressure on pricing. giving customers more ways to buy without paying the higher amounts plaintiffs say they ultimately faced.

In this context, it’s worth noting that similar legal disputes are also being pursued in other regions, underscoring how digital storefront policies are increasingly scrutinized by regulators and courts.

Misryoum says the list of potentially eligible titles shared by the representing law firm includes games such as The Last of Us. NBA 2K18. and Need for Speed Rivals.. The filing also refers to millions of PlayStation Network accounts that could fall under the settlement class. meaning the credits. if approved. could extend to a broad group of users.

For eligible accounts, Misryoum reports that credits would be applied to the PlayStation Network account after final approvals are granted. A Fairness Hearing is scheduled for October 15, where the court would finalize the settlement terms and outline how funds are distributed.

This kind of outcome matters beyond one company or one store: settlements like this can influence how platforms think about third-party promotions, pricing dynamics, and customer choice across the wider digital games market.
