Ramazan Kuramagomedov’s surprise retirement has left the PFL welterweight championship vacant, and the promotion is wasting no time turning that gap into a headline fight.
A new 170-pound champion will be crowned on July 25 when PFL visits Washington for a card headlined by undefeated Thad Jean (11-0) and Shamil Musaev (18-1-1). The event is set for CareFirst Arena and will air on ESPN.
PFL framed the match as a world title opportunity for Jean, who has stayed unbeaten in PFL competition.. PFL CEO John Martin said, “Thad Jean did everything that was asked of him.. He won the 2025 tournament. beat elite competition. took the hardest path. and now he can finish the job and become PFL Welterweight World Champion on July 25.”
Martin also positioned Musaev as the kind of opponent who can make “PFL gold” elusive even for a fighter coming in with momentum.. “Standing across from him is Shamil Musaev. one of the most proven and dangerous welterweights in the world. a fighter in pursuit of the one thing he doesn’t have yet: PFL gold.. Jean enters the title opportunity with an undefeated record and momentum from his most recent win. He is coming off a victory over former Bellator champ Jason Jackson.
Musaev’s path is different, but it also begins with a familiar name. Musaev lost to Kuramagomedov in their February title fight, but the retirement has now opened the door for a second shot at the championship.
The shape of the matchup tracks the same sequence: Kuramagomedov’s February title fight ended with Musaev losing, then Kuramagomedov’s retirement removed the championship entirely, and July 25 now brings Musaev back into a title position against the undefeated Jean.
