Payton Wilson admits Rodgers return left him shocked
Linebacker Payton Wilson said he was “a little shocked” to see Aaron Rodgers back at the Steelers facility, a moment that arrived with Rodgers returning earlier than last year. Rodgers is signed and reported for OTAs after previously showing up at minicamp’s t
The weekend news hit quickly: Aaron Rodgers is back with the Steelers.
For Payton Wilson, though, it wasn’t something he’d been expecting on a Monday. He walked into the facility while Rodgers was heading out, and Wilson said the sight still caught him off guard.
“I was walking in, and he was coming out, and it was good to see him,” Wilson said. “I was a little shocked, definitely.”
Last year, the timing looked different. Rodgers arrived for the mandatory minicamp at the tail end of the offseason program. This time, he signed and reported for the first day of OTAs, giving the Steelers more time together during a window where every practice rep matters.
The practical reality is that long-time coach Mike Tomlin wasn’t there for the early stretch of work. and there’s only so much time for the group to do everything that needs doing before the season moves closer.. Rodgers’ earlier presence changes the tone of the week.. It’s one thing to arrive later when the calendar is already tight.. It’s another to be there from day one, ready to take part in the fundamentals and the installs.
Wilson’s reaction framed that immediacy. If this is Rodgers’s last year, there’s reason to assume everyone is going to try to make the most of it. In the Steelers’ case, the goal is clear: advance past the wild-card round of the playoffs, something the team hasn’t done in a decade.
The sequence here is simple—Rodgers signed and showed up early. and Wilson was surprised to see him at the facility—yet it lands with bigger meaning for a team trying to turn offseason work into postseason breakthroughs.. Rodgers being both signed and committed doesn’t guarantee anything on the field. but it does offer a sign that the investment is real and the focus is immediate.. The work starts now. and for the Steelers. the stakes begin with getting everything right before the first game even comes into view.
Payton Wilson Aaron Rodgers Steelers OTAs minicamp Mike Tomlin wild-card round NFL
So basically Payton Wilson was shocked he saw Rodgers?? Like okay lol.
I don’t get it… Rodgers is coming in early and everyone’s acting like it’s some huge thing. Wasn’t Tomlin there anyway? So what changed, timing only?
Wait I thought Rodgers was still “on the fence” or whatever, but now he’s signed and doing OTAs from day one. If he’s really all in then why did he look so rusty last year? Wild-card round in a decade… yeah they better step up.
This feels like the NFL version of an employee coming back to the office early and everybody claps. Also if Tomlin wasn’t there, how are they even doing installs? Don’t they just show up and take selfies now? Idk, I just hope Steelers fans aren’t getting their hopes up too fast.
