Orioles Place Ryan Helsley on IL With Elbow Inflammation

Baltimore put closer Ryan Helsley on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation and made several roster moves ahead of games in New York.

A key bullpen piece has been sidelined, as the Baltimore Orioles placed closer Ryan Helsley on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.

The team announced the move Friday, citing the issue as the reason for the IL placement.. The timing is notable not only because Helsley is the Orioles’ late-inning option. but also because the decision followed a media availability by manager Craig Albernaz before Baltimore’s series opener at the New York Yankees.

For an Orioles club relying on stable relief innings. Helsley’s absence creates an immediate lineup question: who closes the final outs in games that swing on leverage.. While the IL update is limited to the elbow ailment. the timing ensures Baltimore will need a quick and reliable plan for its highest-pressure situations.

Helsley, a right-handed pitcher, is 31 years old and signed a two-year, $28 million contract in December. In his season work so far, he has recorded seven saves opportunities and has posted a 2.53 ERA across 12 appearances, with 15 strikeouts and seven walks in 10 2/3 innings.

He is not unfamiliar with injury-related downtime.. Earlier in his career with the St.. Louis organization, Helsley was sidelined from June 7 to Sept.. 1, 2023, with a strained right forearm.. Baltimore’s decision to send him to the IL underscores how teams often prioritize prevention when elbow issues threaten pitch effectiveness.

In addition to the Helsley move, the Orioles made other roster adjustments around their Yankees stretch.. Baltimore recalled left-hander Cade Povich from Triple-A Norfolk to take a start. selected the contract of right-hander Albert Suárez from the Tides. and optioned right-hander Cameron Foster back to Norfolk.

This kind of churn may seem routine in baseball, but it matters because it can reshape matchups for days at a time. With the postseason window always looming, relief health and bullpen continuity often end up being as consequential as any single start.

Helsley’s IL placement is retroactive to Wednesday, giving the Orioles a defined timeline to monitor the inflammation and determine next steps. For now, Baltimore will need other pitchers to absorb the late innings while Helsley recovers.
